Hi! Anyone know of any good DVD's to get to do a routine with a boxing bag?

I have the Get Addicted boxing bag set (Amazon, $90ish for 6 dvd's) She uses the entire bag, and it's fun. It's investment i know, but they are specifically made for heavy bag use.
But I also use my Illaria Powerstrike 5 and 6 on the heavy bag. And Susan Chung Rapid Fire 4. I also use Aerobox.

Just learn some basic combos by watching videos on youtube and drill them on the bag. You don't need a workout video to hit a heavy bag.

I love doing heavy bag work and I can't imagine trying to do it while watching a DVD. This is the best thing I've phone for my Android and it's called, "Shoutbox Workout Timer". You basically setup the number of rounds, minutes of each round, and intensity and the app calls-out strikes and combination strikes and it's completely random. I use it in two different ways, 3 rounds at 5-minutes w/ 1-min rest or 10 rounds at 30-sec w/ 10-sec rest (high intensity). The app is free.
Edit: I just looked at the update section on my phone and it might actually be called "MMA Training and Fitness Timer" by Krausnick Studios. Try both names in a search I guess.0 -

I'm gonna have to try both of those.
The app is really good. I just plug my headphones in, put my gloves on, and then just start beating the *kitten* out of the bag. There is not much other conditioning that I've done that's as challenging.0 -
Bookmarking this. I love my big bag, though the setup is not ideal: it's one of those bags with a stand as I cannot drill decent holes into my house walls (landlord disagrees, and I don't trust the building quality). I'm just feeling terribly uncreative working out on it, and my feet are extremely clumsy. I really have problems coordinating hands and feet at the same time.0

Try doing some jump rope, that could help. Also, try Googling "Balance Training" and you might get some ideas on that.0 -
I went to a HIIT boxing/self defense for women class and just took the workouts they did there. I wrote them down, got an interval timer on my phone and now I use my heavy bag at home, but I'm definitely going to look into those two apps to see if I can shake things up a bit. Thanx0

That sounds like fun too. I just like the app because it is completely random, no two sessions or even rounds will be the same, each call-out is completely random and the only thing that you have to remember is what the number represents. The app my call-out "right-straight" or it might call=out "3" which means Jab > Right Straight > Jab. You don't have to memorize an entire workout.0 -

Cheers. No jump roping for me or anything else involving jumping as I have seriously dodgy feet and ankles. But indeed I need to improve on using my legs bigtime. It usually looks better if I use kicks because then I'm not 'dancing' around, but still...0 -
I bought this app and did five 1 minute rounds with it today after a bodyrock type workout. Works quite well I must say. I only did the first workout though. I thing I did notice: it's not so easy to do as my bag/stand makes quite a bit of noise and my iphone is not the loudest. The instructions are at times difficult to hear. On 1.5 speed the breaks between jabs are rather long, but still a bit too short for 4-punch combos. But it's good fun, and with this I don't dance around in front of the bag (don't ask! I just have the feeling I should move my feet).
One thing though: I need better gloves! I have thick boxing gloves but don't like them. And I have a pair of rather old thin gloves with padding only over my knuckles. Useful for doing a few pushups inbetween rounds, but the ending of the fingers stopped protecting my knuckles after a few hits, and now I have a few bleeding ones. Oh well... it's unlikely I'll get somethig better here.0 -
You can also use the C25K app on a heavy bag. Just replace "walk" with light shadow boxing and "run" with hard and heavy bag work. It will destroy you.0

That's really cool. Yes, the volume can be too low and I do find that I have to max my volume on my phone when doing it. You can always try increasing the tempo a little if you need. I think things like a 4 followed by another punch or combo are good because it really tests your reaction time as well and should help develop some hand-speed. The reaction training is something I noticed as well. It's pretty cool! I did do a bit more 2s or 4s today than were called Yes, my phone was on max volume, and I don't have any external speakers. I think I'll try for a longer, and slightly faster workout tomorrow. I should go to the office with damaged fingers as my reputation of injuring myself is fading. Only joking of course! I need to get the reaction thing a bit more under control, and then I'll try kicks. I'm at times so clumsy I might start a kick with the other leg while the first is still in the air.
Which reminds me, the headquaters has a great gym in the cellar, and they also offer fitness boxing classes. When I was still working there I was probably the only person ever being knocked out during a class. During a cushion (or whatever that big pad is called) session.0 -

And in the end I did 5 minutes at speed 2.0. I think I can leave it there, or go a little bit slower. Funny thing is: I didn't really get out of breath, while 1 minute of boxing at the company gyn completely killed me back then. Though I was a lot less fit back then.0

Wow, that's pretty good. I've been doing 3 rounds @ 5-min/each at 1.5 intensity and I'm worn down by the end of that.
When I first started my knuckles were shredded and that was with gloves. I went out and bought some better training gloves and my hands have been fine.0 -

I had these more like MMA gloves at first and I was killing my knuckles, the last time I used them was Xmas Eve actually and I still have marks on my knuckles from that session. These new gloves I have are great, I can pound away and not feel a thing.
I think this has exposed a flaw in my conditioning. With the 5-minute rounds (x3), I need that 1-minute to catch my breath. I also enjoy doing 30-sec rounds / 10-sec rest @ an intensity of 2.0 -

It's this specific app's definition of the rate at which it calls-out strikes to execute. Rough example...
Intensity 1 could be, Left Jab...., Left Jab...., Right Cross...., 3...., Left Jab
Intensity 2 could be, Left Jab., Left Jab., Right Cross., 3., Left Jab
Basically how much of a break do you get in-between having to throw a punch or combination. For competitive fighters it's probably not great but as a form of conditioning it's pretty cool and you get to practice punching something.0 -
That seems like it would feel really weird. When you box or kickbox you'll throw a bunch of strikes really quickly and then back up and dance around for a minute before doing it again.0

Yeah, it's far from a tool for actual fight-training. What I should've mentioned is that you can select the option for it to tell you to move, so it might tell you to through a Jab and then move. Now that I've been doing it for a while I will often just move on my own just to get into what would be a better striking position. Using the intensity of 2+, in my opinion at least is best for short bursts. I think I mentioned earlier that I like to do rounds that are 30-sec's on / 10-sec's off at the higher intensity. Doing it that way is similar to what you just said in that you're throwing strikes and backing off.

Are you guys using hand wraps under your gloves? In addition to providing wrist support, they will keep boxing gloves from creating that friction on your knuckles and provide a extra layer of protection.0 -

The last pair of gloves I had were more like MMA gloves and I did end-up getting wraps which helped a lot. BUT... towards the end of the workout when I'm tired my aim on the punch might be off and I was scraping the un-gloved portion of my fingers too, basically a mis-hit. Sssooo... I just went out and got some better training gloves that protect my entire hand and I don't need wraps now. LOL0 -
Okay, the right training eqiupment make a world of difference. Just advice, I would still wrap my hands. Hitting a heavy bag can easily result in hand and wrist injuries without wraps.

That's what I'm doing indeed.
Today's workout: 10x2 minutes at speed 1.7 with 1minutes various exercises and 15 seconds break inbetween. Then 5 minutes at speed 2.0 with a tiny break* Much more moving around during boxing this time.
exercises today: left kettlebell clean & press, right kettlebell clean & press, kettlebell halo, situp with kettlebell, straight leg raise
tried straight arm windmill or something like that but my arms refused.
couldn't do 8 because I cannot rapidly change hands with the kettlebell when wearing my gloves.
* I cannot set my phone to never on standby, only to 5 minutes max *sigh* need to talk to the company IT guys who probably changed the settings.0 -
Oh wow! I noticed today that my core made huge improvements since I'm boxing. I'm not getting a red head anymore when doing straight leg raises for example. Interesting!0
