I'm a 18 year old male, I'm 6'1, 210 pounds. I'm trying to get down to 180 or 170 pounds. I was wondering, when I can expect to be there? I'm being told I can't expect to lose 2 pounds a week, which seems odd to me, considering I have 30 or 40 pounds to lose. I don't want it to take 30 or 40 weeks. I was hoping to be at least close to my goal by late May or June.

Why are you worrying about how long it will take? You just need to start and take it as it comes. You'll probably drop a lot of water weight first couple of weeks then settle down to around a pound a week

Lift heavy to preserve as much muscle as possible

I'm female, more than twice your age, 5'8 and weigh 166.. You might be surprised what weight you actually end being happy with because it's not about the weight on the scale but the body composition

It took me 8 months to lose 45lbs but I lost 20 or so in about 2-3 of those months and then slowed it down ...I've been on 0.5lbs a week for a few months

Exactly this. Why are you in a hurry?

I know plenty of guys your height that are your weight and/or bigger and have amazing physiques. If you're just wanting to look good, don't pin your hopes on a specific weight. If you're competing in something like powerlifting, well, that's another issue.

I'm not sure how 3-5 months is hurrying.

Take it a day at a time, nothing magical is going to happen at a specific weight ...this is your lifestyle change ...you have a journey and a learning curve to form new, innate habits

I am a 44 year old female who was around 55 pounds overweight. I lost 45 pounds since May 27, 2013 by following the calorie targets MFP gives me and exercising. Consistency and accuracy are the keys to successful weight loss. Log as accurately as you can every day. It becomes second nature.

My weight loss was around 1.5 to 2 pounds per week, but I have slowed to .5 per week because I find it way too difficult for me to eat below a certain calorie limit. I reset my goals to losing .5 per week, and it is coming off slower than that, but I am in no rush for these last 10 pounds. I would rather be happy and healthy with a slower rate of loss than miserable and hungry, just so it'll happen faster.

Besides, the slower you go, the more likely your efforts will become a lifestyle change (thus staying slim for LIFE), and not "just another diet you went on".

The point is that you shouldn't put a timeline on weight loss. It'll happen when it happens. Besides that, every body is different when it comes to weight loss. It's impossible to say how long it takes for any one person to lose a set amount of weight.

So, to try and answer your question, I'm about the same height as you, but weighed 275. It took me 4 months to drop 40lbs. Of course I had a lot more weight to lose, but you can probably do it in 3 to 6 months.

I don't think there is anything wrong with setting a goal with a time and trying to achieve that goal.
