Chipotle Fibbers!

Now that I'm trying to weigh and count, I don't go out to eat all that often. Today, however, I went to Chipotle for lunch. Tried to be good...choose something that sounded healthy-ish and worth the calories.

BUT

Their website nutritional calculator lists the weights as 4 oz each of steak and chicken for combo (doesn't 2oz each, 4oz total sound more accurate?), 4oz for black beans, and 4 oz for guacamole.
This doesn't seem accurate to me, just by eyeballing.

Has anybody actually measured the ingredients in a bowl before, and/or can back up what their site says?

It takes some practice, but usually you can eye ball food quantities while dining out. How many spoon scoops of steak or chicken? One or two? If one of each, probably closer to 4 oz in total. The eye balling can take practice. If you're not there yet, try measuring out chicken at home and match the size to Chipotle. I know that's vague, but I hope it helps!

I don't know, but their portion sizes are ridiculous in general.

This doesn't really answer your question, but I just want to mention that their kids meals have a much more reasonable portion size. I've found that those are a much better option than, say, a burrito.

you should use your search function.

There were a few apocalyptically funny threads about Chipotle here.

I should have gotten a kids meal! That didn't even occur to me at the time... I was too overwhelmed with all the choices and how fast they threw everything together!

I have to say, 800 cals for lunch is NOT what I wanted to eat, but the 75g of protein looks pretty impressive!

These might help with the eyeballing.

I usually just get a burrito bowl and save half for the next day. Calories end up being 375 or so.

I get a salad with a scoop of steak, black beans, grilled veggies, corn salsa and cheese and it's 520 calories.

But how do you know it's 520 calories? I don't trust the measurements on their website, that what I'm saying...

I got the same as you, except 1/2 chicken and 1/2 steak, and no cheese, guac instead. How is mine almost 300 cals MORE than yours?!

Because guacamole is 65 calories per ounce.

I love Chipotle; my husband and I will split a burrito bowl once in a while. But definitely not when I'm actively trying to lose weight. Technically I know when you're trying to lose weight you can eat anything, but not knowing exactly what I'm eating bothers me too much when I try to measure everything to the gram.

Now I've heard that you can ask the Chipotle workers to weigh it out to make sure you get the correct serving size. I've never done that myself and I don't know if it would slow down the line too much by asking.

But I didn't have 4.3 ounces of the stuff! lol

I can't find anywhere that shows or says how big their serving scoops are.

How do you know that any of the food you get out at a restaurant matches the calorie count given by the restaurant? Hint: You don't and it doesn't.

Calorie counting is not exact and that's just something you have to accept when you use it as a tool for weight management.

Me too! That's why I'm questioning these weights.

I have a friend that eats there 3 times a day sometimes. He is like a living hulk though and has a ton of muscles and is in really great shape. He goes to the gym twice a day and looks absolutely flawless.

You should see what he eats when he doesn't eat out... dreamy...

If you're pissed that your meal wound up being around 1,200 calories, then you've probably estimated accurately. While delicious and seemingly "healthy," it's easy to consume quite a few calories at this place. Eating out at most fast food joints, while getting something I like, is a really difficult thing for me. My MO is now a salad with a protein, but usually has to be from a decent restaurant (and without some horrifyingly fatty dressing).

OK, never actually weighed their bowls, but why would a restaurant routinely serve overly-large portions? Kiss Mr. Profit Margin bye-bye....

Gotta have my double barbacoa salad w/ fajita veggies, tomato salsa, corn salsa and guacamole. 690 calories and 56g of protein. Heaven!

Betcha ya did. The scoop they use for guac is pretty huge.

In eyeballing what they use, It's either a #8 or #10 scoop.

An 8 is a half cup.

I just go by what the website says and I don't worry about it. It's not like I'm going to be eating Chipotle every single day. I had Chipotle 3 times last month. I still managed to lose weight.

Sure, it's probably not accurate, but it's probably not TOO horribly off the mark. If you weigh everything else out it most likely won't hurt you.

Here's a good story too: When I was working midnight shift a couple years ago and was also doing WW, I got chipotle every single night before work. That week I lost 3 pounds. I think if chipotle was that far off the mark, I probably wouldn't have been able to lose that much weight.

I usually eat a lot less for lunch when I know I'm having chipo-po later that night! It's I get a salad with a shell underneath (count it as a burrito) chicken, no rice, pinto beans, cheese, all salsas, and even God Forbid the Sour Cream. It's always worth it because it's so filling and nothing about it is crazy unhealthy in small portions. It's close to Heaven, around 850 calories.

Sounds like a good plan. :)
I didn't get a bunch of junk and "meaningless" calories, so I'm not upset about it. I'm fine with what I ate - it was delicious!

I don't see anything for a "combo" on their website...I would assume that if you choose chicken and beef they're going to give you a "serving size" which is going to be roughly 4 ounces of whatever protein you chose...they're not going to give you a double serving just because you want two different kinds of meat.

Most of your calories there are going to be in the guacomole...which is a very healthy choice, but is also calorie dense...don't confuse nutritional awesomeness with caloric density...there are any number of healthful foods that are jam packed with nutrition...and calories.

All in all, I'm coming up with about 530ish calories.

Still better than the 800 they gave me. :)
That's around the number I got as well.

People like getting a lot for their money. It makes them come back again. Higher total profit beats higher profit margin any day.
