Hi! I found it hard as I had a lot of habits to give up - wine every day, chocolate and cake every day, mountains of buttery carbs, a passion for dairy and fat-rich cooking.. I had to change all that to the standard diet stuff - lean meat, fruit, fish, veggie omelettes, soups, salads, smaller portions of carbs without fat, small controlled treats. It was all a total change -especially not drinking wine every day was tough. But after 6 weeks 14 lb was gone! A slimming club really helped me stay focused - I attended every week for a year and stayed to the meeting as well as the weigh.

To begin with I just started using a cross-trainer three times a week as I'd done no exercise for years. But when the weight loss slowed I decided to learn tennis, from scratch, and became really quite addicted to it.. I think the tennis replaced the comfort food. I've kept up with the tennis three or four times a week for a couple of hours each time, and around last summer I started the MFP calorie counting, as the healthy eating alone wasnt causing weight loss, despite all the tennis. Ive allowed myself to plateau a lot - its all been very gentle losses since last summer really.

For me it's a going back to an old slim self - I was slim as a child and up until age 35. Losing my job, infertility and moving away from London made me pile it on. I think it's very much harder for people who are embarking on a journey to be slimmer than they've ever been, because they're crossing new frontiers and challenging themselves in very new ways. Not impossible, but extremely tough. I think you have to be unbelievably patient with yourself, with the journey, and see it as something that might very well take years to achieve.

There are a lot of things I can no longer do - aisles in supermarkets I can't visit, people I don't visit, multipacks I don't buy because I have poor willpower, dishes I can't allow myself to cook as I'd eat the whole lot. I have to shop every day as a lot of food of any kind in the house is bad news for me. I hope my willpower will grow with time, but as I've always been something of a binge eater I think I have to protect myself against it. I remember being very very young and stealing money from my Mum's purse to buy sweets. No-one in my family was fussed for them except me. The wanting food as comfort is a very deep-seated thing in me, I still do it, but it's all calorie counted and much reduced from what it used to be. Of course I need fewer calories too now, the three stone takes a lot of calories to carry round.

I don't think I'm especially good at slimming - I have severe endometriosis as well which makes it hard some of the month. But even when something is difficult you can just chip away and get it done. Good luck to you, be patient and brave and you will have success. Xx
