Want to lose more than 2 lbs a week

I am 120.5 kilos. I have set myfitnesspal to lose 2 pounds of weight a week. Since I am so heavy, I think I should be able to lose 1.5-3 kilos a week to start off with. (3.3lb-6.6). In New Zealand, they say a healthy amount of weight to lose a week is 1-2 kilos (I think) (2.2-4.4lbs)
What do you think? If this is true, then what weight should I be able to get down to before I am back to losing 1-2lbs a week? I am 5'8/173cms tall.

Didn't you just post in another thread about your calories having gone down? Do you perhaps see the connection?0

Even if you were able to lose more than 2lbs a week, the rate of loss would slow down a ton after the first 20 or so pounds. Not to mention, to lose more than that you'd likely have to make some pretty awful unsustainable life changes.
Is there a reason why you want to lose so rapidly?0 -
I think for myself, maintaining muscle mass is more important than dropping weight quickly. You didn't gain it that quickly, what's the rush?0
-
My understanding is a healthy weight loss is 1% of your total weight per week so the more you weigh the more you can loss. So 1.2kg sounds like how much you should aim for.0

Yes I did. I had 2 seperate questions.notnikkisixx wrote: »Even if you were able to lose more than 2lbs a week, the rate of loss would slow down a ton after the first 20 or so pounds. Not to mention, to lose more than that you'd likely have to make some pretty awful unsustainable life changes.

I hate being this big. Some people have said if I lift weights I will look smaller faster, but my weightloss would be slower?Liftng4Lis wrote: »I think for myself, maintaining muscle mass is more important than dropping weight quickly. You didn't gain it that quickly, what's the rush?
I don't know, just sick of being this big. I want to be at goal weight by the end of the year. (goal weight is 63-70 kilos)

A good maximum rate of weight loss is 1% body weight lost per week. So that'd be about 2.6 pounds per week for you. If I were you, I'd set my calorie intake at TDEE - 20% and just go from there.0

Faster =/= better
Just because you are heavy does not mean you are immune to the problems associated with larger losses. It's more sustainable and healthier to lose at the recommended amounts (ie 2 lbs/week or less). There are reasons why there's those recommendations.0 -
I know you must be frustrated with the weight, however a quick loss won't be sustainable and won't teach you the habits you need to develop to keep it off. My mom has a similar body type and I've watched her try unsuccessfully for years to lose weight fast by any means necessary...it never stays off.
If I were you I'd suck it up and take the slow route to a healthy body. Spend some time researching nutrition and figure out a new way of eating that you can stick to for life. Slowly introduce physical activity into your routine, don't jump into killing yourself at the gym 5x a week right away. Taking things slowly will give you the opportunity to develop life habits that will provide lasting results.0 -
The 1% thing is a myth. Just because something is a nice round number doesn't mean there's any scientific basis for it.
OP, slow is better. Slow means healthy, sustainable, better chance of keeping it off, better chance of hanging onto your lean muscle while you lose, better chance of sticking with it and getting good nutrition. All good things.
You didn't put the weight on overnight. Don't expect to take it off overnight.0 -
First, congrats to making the decision to lose weight. Second, take a step back and realize you didn't gain this weight in a few months and it's going to take you awhile to lose it.
The best eating plan is one that is sustainable for a lifetime. If you are just starting out, you'll most likely have a few larger than 2 lbs per week loses. Don't try and beat the system...it works! The slower (@ 2 lbs per week) you lose the weight, the better chance you have of keeping it off.
Lastly, remember that you can control what you put in your mouth; you can't control what the scale says. If you are eating healthy and paying more attention to your health - don't worry about reaching your goal by a certain date. IMO, that just sets you up for failure.
Best of luck!0 -
I felt like you when I started - I just wanted the weight off as soon as possible. I ate 1200 calories a day which is nowhere near enough for a tall person with a physical job. I ate too little and lost the weight very fast. I have gone from obese to normal weight, but I have wasted off a lot of muscle and could be described now as "skinny fat", something I have never been. I also have a lot of loose skin, which is very ugly as well as irreversible. I therefore plead with you to think long term, go for 2lb a week and don't drop your calories too low! I really regret the way I did it, and I don;t want you to. Best wishes to you.0

You are lighter than I was when I started nineteen months ago. And I'm only 5' 4". Patience. Learn to enjoy the journey.0

In the other thread you said you were having trouble getting on track and eating lower calories. Rather than focusing on the amount you will lose, why not try to get yourself on a path to losing consistently in a way that you will be able to maintain for a long time and then transition into maintenance (which can't mean going back to what you were doing while gaining).
You have lots to lose (so did I!) so it's going to take time, and that means it's really important not to make yourself miserable while losing or you won't be able to stick it.
You likely will lose a bit more at first--most people drop water weight--but the important thing is (a) not to gain any more, and (b) start losing regularly. Whenever you reach goal, if you start losing 1-2 lbs/week you will feel so much better in just a short time (way before you are a weight you consider ideal, IME, because you will feel hopeful and like you know what to do), and you will have lost an amount that makes a difference in just a short period of time in the scheme of things (seriously, as I get older months and even a year just seem to fly by).
I started with 100 lbs to lose, and losing my first 30 I was still at a weight that not long before I'd considered my all time heaviest. Yet because I was losing and had lost enough to make a difference in how I felt and what clothes fit and because I was active and doing long bike rides and generally living a healthy life, I felt really good. I suspect I wouldn't have felt so good if I'd been beating myself up and insisting on super low calories and no occasional restaurant meals and other things that are part of my lifestyle.0 -
Okay. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get faster results but stick with 1-2 pounds a week?0

It might not be scientific but as a general rule it makes sense to me. Say your 150kg then losing 1.5 a week sounds ok. And as you get closer to a healthy weight you lose less per week. Does it make sense for a 85kg person to lose 1kg or 2 pounds? Or does it make more sense that they lose .8 of a kilo?

How do you get from 150 to 100 while staying at 1-2 pounds, faster? If your going at a constant speed?

Stop with "faster results" and do what everybody suggested, figure your TDEE eat -20% less of that, get food scale weigh all solid foods and measure liquids and exercise.
Slow and steady is the healthy way of losing weight and sustainable and will be easier to keep off.0 -

You will have an easier time maintaining if you stick to 1 or 2. Even 3 is fine, but anything higher than that isn't a good idea. Slow and steady win the race.0

Given the other thread you started about struggling with the lower than expected calorie goal given to you, the fact that you are not logging consistently and that you have said about recently gaining despite the desire to lose, you really need to look at what REALLY want and plan appropriately.
The replies and advice that you have received you seem to be skipping over and focusing solely on a contrary and confusing mindset. I wonder whether you are struggling with extra anxiety and determined focus on losing weight in a unsustainable manner is part of the Asperger (sp) condition you mention in another post. If that resonates with you perhaps seeking a dietician's direct help or speaking with your Doctor might be an idea.
No one on here is trying to be rude, nasty or unhelpful.....Yes there is bluntness and you may not like what you are hearing because it doesn't fit with what you want to be true.....but it does NOT make it false.
You have reached out and asked for help and now you ignore the responses......You are not the 1st and you won't be the last person to want the weight GONE NOW, but do try to stop panicking and focus on getting your head around:
Weighing everything that you put in your mouth.
Log. Every. Single. Day. The good the bad and the ugly. Two months of solid logging will give you a chance to develop this HABIT.
Read all the starter threads on MFP and get yourself a group of friends who are experienced and successful at weight loss and goal accomplishment and LISTEN to their advice.
Counteract any way you can the desire to lose at a faster rate than people are advising.....expect that some weeks you will lose more than others. Weight loss is not a linear process.
Embrace PATIENCE amd PERSISTENCE lasts the distance when you can't find the MOTVATION.....you didn't get to the weight you are now overnight, in 6 months even a year, weight loss is the same....it will take time.
Get in some exercise if you enjoy it. Lift weights to retain LBM.
Eat well, eat things you enjoy just less......also for a lady who is 5'8" and your weight there really is no need for you to cut calories down to the extreme that you have......you will lose at a higher calorie allowance not feeling deprived and tired.
Like many other on here this is achievable.....I started out 6 kgs heavier than you and now I have been maintaining my desired loss of 75kgs for over 3 years but that amount of weight loss takes time.
I wish you well.0 -
I started at 268 lbs (which I think is close to your weight)... In January 2013.... 13 months ago.
As of this morning I am now 204.
I had figured that because I was so big that I would drop the weight quickly. It has taken 13 months. If I do the math then that is approximately 1.2 pounds per week.
Slow and steady, kiddo.0 -
Can anyone tell me how to lose quickly but still only lose 1 pound a week? I want to lose my weight as fast as I can but I don't want to lose more than 1 pound a week. I'd like to lose 20 pounds in 5 weeks. I think that is a good goal.0

Take a deep breath, OP. You can do this. You are getting overwhelmed with the idea of losing all the weight NOW. You do sound anxious and almost panic-stricken. I understand how that can be. Your emotions are going to be a barrier to you so I think you would do better with more personal support in addition to following the advice above on detailed logging. I second the idea of partnering with a dietician, a therapist, or a weight loss group to help you get a calmer perspective. I imagine this is not your first time feeling these feelings when starting a new goal so if you have you have some coping (relaxation/ cognitive behavioral) skills you can use, then employ them and come back and read the advice you've gotten on these two threads. Try to figure out if there has been a recent trigger that is making you feel all of a sudden desperate to lose the weight instantly. I work in the mental health/ behavioral health field so please PM me if I can be of some help or encouragement to you!0

Wait, you don't want to lose more than 1 pound a week (which is good) but your goal is to lose 20 pounds in 5 weeks? I am certainly no math genius, but that doesn't really add up.0 -
