A friend of mine uses them and swears by them for a flat stomach - thinks she carries excess water and stops her from bloating!?

I agree no. In defense of your friend, while I do not do this and would not, I suppose if you felt you were bloated and had a dress you wanted to wear for a particular occasion - maybe. but for just general use - no, no, no0
