So.... letes just say someone started lifting, and on day 6 may have torn something in their arm slightly. Yes bruising occurred, and range of motion is limited.

How long should a person rest their arm from bench presses or strenuous lifting?

Having done this myself I would suggest you see a Sports Med doc or at a minimum go to your doctor and get a referral for an MRI to see how bad is. You will need to take some meaningful time off from the lifts affected by that injury. It took me about 4-months and I probably rushed it to be honest, probably should've requested surgery too because it didn't heal quite right on its own.

    Definitely go to a doctor.
And when you're healed, take a refresher on proper form.

Unfortunately I think it was more of a 'pushed myself through a rep too many'. Everything online generally says heat, ice and anti-inflammatory is all unless it is bad enough needing surgery. I think/hope it will heal... its day 4.5 of after-rest and the bruising is almost faded gone. Afraid to risk it.

I would not do ANY weight bearing involving that arm until you have completely pain free range of motion. After that, try something that may feel ridiculous - like a 1 lb bar bell or even a can of soup - put yourself through range of motion and if you have ANY pain you are not good to go. The bruising indicates a tear -

    depends.

What has their medical treatment team told them to do?

When I tore my pectoral tendon it bruised pretty good but the bruise was actually located around my bicep because that's where the blood settled. Give it a couple days but have a doctor in-mind.

It may not have been an issue of form. If it's just 6-days it may have been an issue of your tendon(s) (I'm assuming of course) weren't ready for what you were about to do.

I waited too long to see a doctor after injuring my wrist last summer. In case this is holding anyone back from seeing their doctor, there's a world of options between RICE/MEAT and surgery. My medical team's treatment plan included prescription medications, braces of varying degree, ultrasound, UV light, and mobility/strengthening routines. My wrist is still not yet 100%, but in some ways it's stronger than most now. I would see a doctor if it hurts more than a few days.

I can't help making this thread sound like a broken record: Get it checked out at least by your own doc, if not then a sports medicine specialist. In the meantime, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Advil (as long as you're not allergic!!!) and ice or heat, whatever feels best. Oh yeah, and REST it!

I definitely believe this is probably the case. the bruising is located on my outer arm & bicep. I have one arm that is weaker than the other and pushed out one too many reps before that particular arm was ready.

You may or may not need a referral from your primary care doc (or an urgent care center). If you do, see if you can get one over the phone.
