how to work out the calories for various foods?

hi all, i am just wondering how people work out the calories in certain foods? tonight i am having a 180 gram pork loin steak for dinner. there are several entries in the database for the same thing but the calories seem to vary greatly. i have found this with several items of late and now realize that even though i am weighing what i am eating my actual calorie count could be miles off each day due to this. how do others get the calories for things?

I use calorieking, or the nutritional information on the packs. The meat packs I usually buy will say '100 calories per 4oz', a 1lb pack would be around 400 calories. That's for fish or chicken, I believe. But calorie king seems better since you can change the measurements to grams/ounces/cups/liters, anything.0

I use the barcode scan for 90% of my entries and double check all the info0

i will give calorie king a go then, thanks :-) there is generally no calories given on our meat here, just the weight.0

Read the information at these MFP post. It has links to multiple very good reads. http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/833026/important-posts-to-read/p1

Try the USDA site as a cross reference.

USDA = United States dept. of Agruculture. I go by the usda lists mostley. They are very close to other sites I trust on giving right info. (calories count and nutritionvalues.org)0
