How many calories deficit should I use to,lose weight? I stick to 1200 calories to eat, but I exercise a lot including cardio and weight/ strength training so I have some pretty large deficits and I am wondering if I am not eating enough.

You're going to have to provide more information. Your stats?

if you're using MFP method you should be eating back your exercise cals.

With 20 pounds to lose, you should choose a pound a week, then drop it to half a pound for your final ten pounds, and eat back half your exercise calories
  • Thank you. I am using MFP, but haven't been eating back any excercise calories, or at least very few. I see many people post that you shouldn't eat back those if you want to lose, but I also know that I need enough food to keep up with my metabolism with all of the exercise that I am doing. So, you think I can still lose if I eat back all of those calories?

The way MFP is set up, you eat them back. However, the database and machines often overestimate your burns. It's recommended to eat back only 50-75% of those calories.

Yes, the site is designed for you to eat them back and still lose (assuming you're entering in accurate information, etc). This is a pretty frequently asked question around here, so some users have taken the time to post explanations about it. I personally like this one best: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/818082/exercise-calories-again-wtf

  • Thank you so much for the feedback! Very helpful information. I think maybe this is why I am not losing much of anything as I am not eating enough.
  • Also, one other think I had is that I do the P90x workouts and some Jillian Michaels workout DVD's, and I am not sure how to enter those in the excercise diary as there are many different excercises and moves included in these workouts.

Most Jillian Michaels workouts can be logged as "circuit training."
  • Thanks. Any ideas for p90x?
