My daily goal is 1200 calories and I am eating healthy meals throughout the day and still not quite to 1200. Is this bad for me?!

Once in a while, no. But if it happens regularly, you're running the risk of not getting enough nutrients to keep your body running, which can cause some serious health problems. Add in some calorie dense foods (nuts, nut butters, full fat dairy, oils, avocados) to bring you up to 1200.0
-
That's what's frustrating me, I'm eating Baked Chicken or Fish with veggies some dinners or I'm eating a wrap for lunch. I just ate a ceasar salad and I'm so full I couldn't finish it. I feel like my stomach is shrinking or at least sending my brain those full signals. Aside from my water intake. I added oolong tea to my diet yesterday and it really feels relaxing and keeps my mind off of food! I just don't know what to do because MFP says I can have 422 more calories and I will do a HIIT exercise that burns 800+ calories, I don't want to deprive my body but I feel I am eating more than enough-_-0
-
Stick to calorie dense foods. Baked chicken/fish and veggies is just about on the opposite end of the spectrum from calorie dense. Calorie dense foods include peanut butter, whole milk, fruit juices, sodas, butter, cheese, nuts, pesto, high fat ground beef, beef, etc.0

Couple of options:
1. You're on MFP to lose weight as per your profile, so obviously you know how to eat more calories. If the tea is interfering with your appetite, go back to water. If salad is making you feel full, have less lettuce and more croutons+dressing. Etc. You answered your own question in your post.
2. Continue on your path of undereating even your already-deficit calorie target by a significant margin every day. Feel really good and righteous about yourself and brag about it on MFP--until the day it all catches up and you post your backlash binge on the Confessions thread.
FYI, I don't doubt you worked really hard and that's awesome!, but you did not burn 800+ calories in 45 minutes on the elliptical.0 -
Why would I want whole milk, juice, soda or ground beef? I'm trying to lose weight!0

Thanks, but i haven't replaced water with tea I added it so maybe the water was already enough and the tea suppressed my appetite more. The workout on the eelliptical is intense if you do it accordingly, I follow Adrian Bryant's Elliptical workout videos on YouTube and it has changed my view of how to go about working up a sweat and giving it my all. I think ill just continue to do what's working I suppose I can't complain. I'm full and I'm eating better than I have in the past!

This may sound crazy but ever since I have changed my diet. My stomach isn't too happy when I consume ground beef:( very interesting if you knew I used to eat nothing but pastas, tacos, Mexican/Puerto Rican food!0

Yea ok, that's probably a good plan...

Are you weighing with a food scale? If you're not, it's possible you're eating over 1200 calories anyway. Which is fine and good, though you are unawares.0
-
If you continue to eat under 1200 calories a day, there will come a day where one of two things will happen.
1. You'll be starving and binge because the deprivation has added up until you no longer have the willpower to keep going in that direction.
Or 2. You'll hit a plateau and since you really won't be able to go any lower calorie-wise, what will you do then?
On the other hand, if you don't WEIGH your food and make sure you're picking the correct entries in the database, chances are good that you're eating more than you think, anyway.
So do what you think is best. Good luck.
ETA hit a plateau or start losing weight much slower than you would expect to be losing weight, although that depends entirely on whether you're dieting for an extended period of time.0 -

It doesn't sound crazy, it is completely normal and not indicicative of a "healthy" or 'unhealthy" diet.
People often experience stomach problems when they cut fat low then consume a meal higher in fat than normal (which is probably what is happening with the ground beef meal). Fat isn't bad. Dietary fat is necessary.
The same thing happens when people go from a diet low in veggies then suddenly add veggies. Or go from a bland diet to spicy food.
It's more a reflection of what your stomach is used to than how healthy the diet is.0 -

I have!
I, uh, ran a marathon.
Snark aside--OP, for the average gymgoer, it's very, very difficult to burn more than 10 kcal/minute in sustained exercise. Olympic marathoners and professional cyclists *might* be able to hit 15-20 kcal/minute.
ETA: This article is commercial, but it does a decent job explaining the VO2max-calorie burn (energy use) connection and why it's different for Olympians and mortals like you and me.0 -

I burned over 900 today. I ran 8 miles on a very hilly route. It was more than 45 minutes.

Yes...see, it can be done. But not with 45 minutes on an elliptical. And I would never, and have never done a run/workout like that.0 -

Wear a heart rate monitor and then you'll have a much better idea of how much you're actually burning during your workout. The video didn't play for me, but if you lean on the hand rails like he is in the picture, you burn even less.
If you're estimating your burn based on the readout on the elliptical or what MFP says for a 45 minutes workout, you're over-estimating.0 -
Remember that the small steps make the difference.
Right now you are doing a huge change rather than taking small steps - I know how you feel, I could actually also survive on 800-1000 calories a day and not feel hungry. I know, there's people who think that this is a myth but it does exist. However, I've tried it too many times myself, it is not sustainable. I always crashed at some point and my body was striving for the carbs, many not-complex carbs I would induldge.
- But who knows, maybe this works for you.
You've got to try it yourself. I'm not the one to judge. But remember that if you ever find this not working for you anymore, either because your mind or your body crashes, there's other ways! Almost nobody finds the right way to lose and keep off the weight the first time they try. We all gotta figure out our own way. (*)0 -

A HRM isn't going to be totally reliable either. The calorie estimation algorithms are based on steady state cardio. I know from OP's other thread that the video is a HIIT style workout so the interval side of things will end up with the HRM overestimating.0 -
arditarose wrote: »I'm sorry I'm not laughing at you, OP. Just the video. You're probably burning about 400 calories.
Yeah, I would have to agree. I do intervals on my spinning bike and my heart rate is more than 85% of my max (virtually the entire time) and that's only about 10 calories a minute. And it's so exhausting that 45 mins would be hell. I think I've done it that long once or twice.
I also do intervals on my Precor elliptical and I don't think he's doing this right. He's holding himself up and just moving his legs really fast. That's not going "all out". All out would be high ramp, high resistance, not holding on at all and would be like hiking/running up a hill. I think the only machine that could reasonably get 800 calories in 45 minutes is a rowing machine. I did that once and thought I was going to die.
Not trying to offend you; I've been a a cardio bunny and I have several pieces of equipment in my home.
Are you wearing a heart rate monitor? If so, what does that say? Also, it depends on your weight as well. If you are small, you are definitely not burning 800 calories in 45 minutes.0 -

I don't lean on the bars, my elliptical isn't like his. I might look into getting a heart monitor, obviously its the best way to be accurate. Who would want to brag about false accomplishments? You have to be honest with yourself because it shows when we look at our reflection. However,he didn't come through YouTube last night and make my monitor on my machine read 848. Either way, months ago I would do a basic exercise on the elliptical and I know without a doubt doing this video makes me sweat like crazy so I know I have been getting enough cardio in. I'm not an expert or I wouldn't be on here learning and looking for other's with similar goals. I'm trying to change my habits and I am very open to everyone's input and even more excited to learn what works for them! So I appreciate ALL of your honest opinions:)0

Yes, exactly why I'm worried about not getting enough. I wish I could afford a nutritionalist so I wouldn't have to guess if my meal plan for the day is a smart one. I still am trying to learn how much % carbs protein and fat I should be following:(0 -
Heart rate monitors are only accurate in steady state cardio. This isn't steady state and therefore are inaccurate readings. You didn't burn 848 calories.
Use a food scale. Eat the same things you used to eat just in moderation to at least meet your 1200 calorie goal. That's how most people are actually able to maintain their weight loss and not go through the endless cycle of "dieting"0
