I think I need a pep talk.

I don't weigh my food... it's just not my kind of thing. I'm losing weight steadily. If you don't want to weigh food, don't. I just lowered my daily calorie total a bit to make room for the over-estimates.0
-
Yeah, I do NOT want to be an oblivious dieter, so I chose this method. It's going to work, IT'S GOING TO WORK. Why? Because I'm awesome, and I can do this.
My reason for getting mad at weighing wasnt because of knowing how many calories are in my food, it was the act of actually DOING the weighing. I would love nothing more than to have a label just tell me how many calories are in my muffin, or a cup of baby carrots (im pretty good at estimating how much volume something is- I suck at estimating weight).0 -
There is no actual muffin lol. I don't even like muffins. Someone mentioned it, so I went with it.
I only use this on the computer, I don't own a mobile anything.

And er yeah, I didnt 'weigh' the milk. Mistype on my part. That at least I can just go with what's on the package0

Ugh, Prednisone turns me into a beast. A sh*tty, swollen, hangry beast. I feel ya.
Savor the moment in all it's WTF-unfairness, and move it along. I still have days where I pitch a wall-eyed fit over having to log and I've been doing it on and off since 2013. I'm in the last 10 pounds, but that's no consolation since to KEEP it off I'm still.gonna.have.to.f*cking.log.EVERTYTHING. You're right though - sometimes the only thing that works is that scale. We have a love/hate relationship but truth is I'll probably be buried with the damn thing and an extra battery.
Keep your chin up, and don't let yourself get so hangry that you wind up bingeing. Total demotivator, right there.0 -
Can you make some freezer meals? I occasionally make stew, or chili, or rice/veg/protein. Then I portion it out using my scale and freeze it. Then I have meals that I don't have to weigh while I'm hungry.
Also, I totally have days where I'm tired of measuring everything. Sometimes I cheat, and I guess. About once a week, I take a day of from counting entirely (while still being conscious of my food choices). I'm eight weeks in, and 11lbs down, btw. So cheating isn't the end.
It's a long, hard road, but if it's for your health it's really worth it. Taking a day or two off might be worth it to regain some needed sanity and to be able to come back to it. Mental health is much more important that losing weight, imo.0 -

You are awesome, and you can do it! If you tell yourself you can't have something, then your monkey brain will tell you that you HAVE to have it. Tell yourself you can have a tiny bit of it.
Also, eventually measuring will become just one more thing for you. I started measuring 5 years ago and although I've taken breaks from time to time, I still do it on a regular basis.
And you are SO much healthier for not getting your information from a label! Making food is seriously one of the best ways to lose weight. You know exactly what's in what you're eating!0 -
Thanks so much everyone for letting me have a moment.
Pred is an ugly monster- stay off of it if you can lol.
Now, it is time to go start supper. I don't think I hate that scale right now, so all is good.0 -

Harsh but true...
Is it? People all over the world lose weight with or without a scale. Maybe it's for the OP, maybe it's not. I don't see the need to insult her, personally
And OP said she was getting angry from weighing her food because it means knowing how many calories she will be eating.... and yet even if she doesn't weigh her food, she will still be aware of her calories if she uses an app like MFP. To place the blame on the food scale isn't going to be of any help for long-term success. Either OP needs to not try to lose weight rihgt now or she simply needs to do an approach that involves absolutely no true control and knowledge/insight on her part, e.g. restricting food choices, eating only "clean," eating on tiny baby plates, etc. These methods won't really teach her how to go about eating reasonably in a variety of situations that fall outside of her chosen method in the way tracking calories would, but it would enable her to be oblivious to her intake. And of course there'd be no weight loss guarantees. She might then have to also do a butt-load of cardio to ensure she is creating a deficit.
Stupid Chrome app. Lost my post
Basically I didn't see where she said in the OP that she was mad because the scale told her the food was 750 calories. More like she won't eat it because she doesn't know if it's 125, 150 or 200 calories. Maybe I read a subsequent post a bit too quickly, but I think she's getting swallowed whole by the minutia; like you said in a previous post, perhaps following too regimented of an approach

I think that if you are not motivated and committed to losing weight for your "WHY" then it's not going to work for you as you will always find an excuse to quit! I know i've been there!
As for measuring everything, yes at times it can be annoying but I find that after a while it just becomes routine. I create recipes for all my meals, baked goods, cakes, biscuits etc and weigh all the ingredients when cooking. I measure them equally "cupcakes especially" to ensure the portion sizes are correct thus making sure i log the correct number of calories. Also you can do this once per month, freeze your goods and then it's easy!
As for the prednisone, yes it can cause irritability and other unwelcome side effects. Are you on this long term?? My partner was on it for a long time, so I know it can cause problems with weight gain (usually fluid retention) in some patients. Although he did manage to lose over a stone while taking it, so it is possible to lose weight while taking it!
If the whole situation is sending you crazy, have a break for a week, get yourself back on a level and start again. Good luck.
Edit: Sorry, just noticed ana had mentioned freezing stuff!0 -

Pre-prep meals (weight everything as you go) and then just grab-and-go so that you don't have to worry about every ounce every time you want to eat.0

I don't know...I've never been angry at my food scale before. I actually think of it as a friend.
I would be weary of all that from scratch food, adding up the ingredients and stuff...do you use the recipe builder here on the site?
Or look up recipes on websites that have the nutrition info figured out for you. Of course you'll still have to weigh ...0 -
Stop finding excuses of why its so hard or why you cant.. For once achieve the goal you have in mind. Its not ment to be easy...anything in life you want to achieve cost alot of effort whether its losing weight or any other goal you have it is never going to be easy. So stop making a problem about weighting ur food there is going to be alot more struggle reaching ur goal0

6 weeks. 3 lbs lost. Be patient. Weight loss takes time. Sounds to me like you are not doing this for "you". If this is not the case, hang in there ! 10-20 lbs gone and you start seeing the changes you will be happy and in turn will motivate you to keep going.
I have been here for over 500 days. A year and a half. Sure I have had bad/who cares days once in awhile but always get back on track. Good luck with your journey.0 -
I think my main issue is I have to weigh *everything* to know what's actually in it, as I can't afford pre-made anything. I have to make every single thing from scratch, and weighing it all is just wearing me down. I don't get to say oh hey, I want a muffin, I have to MAKE that muffin. It's so time consuming, and frustrating lol.
I'm not doing this for vanity, I'm doing it for health. I'm surprisingly happy with how I look, I just need to lose weight for myself.
Also- I totally forgot to put this- I'm on prednisone. I KNOW my anger is coming from there, this is so 100% not like me.
Honestly, would taking a few days off be a good thing?
Thanks for telling us it is the prednisone. I was a little worried.
Re weighing: If you eat the same foods over and over again, you do not have to weigh as often. It also makes looking through the data base easier.
There is some evidence (that I do not want to look for right now, excuse me) that people who eat the same foods are more successful at weight loss than other people. (*)
For example, it would be great to have the same exact things for breakfast and lunch everyday for the next month. And then you can have four different dinners that you mix and match depending on the day of the week.
Wishing you luck on this phase of your journey.

I have tried just portion control, I have tried eliminating foods, etc, etc. The ONLY thing that has ever moved my scale has been weighing. I'm just feeling defeated by my food right now. It would be such a nice treat if I could just grab a pre-made anything, and know what the calories are in it.
Venting really did help.
.... you can do that? I ate a pre-made muffin, weighed it at 91 grams, for that brand it comes out to ~300 calories.
Are you talking about not knowing for e.g. when you go buy something that doesn't have caloric information? You can guesstimate like mentioned above.0 -

Just because you want to weigh your food doesn't mean it's necessarily for you. For me? Makes me feel more in control, it's way easier, and lets me just EAT without thinking about things. Other people e.g "eat clean" to lose weight - I did this for 4 years nad it only worked on and off when I would also exercise a lot (I yo-yoed 15lbs that entire time period), it was not mentally and emotionally sustainable. But for others it's way easier and 2nd nature to just not eat x and y. Would I recommend that? Personally, no, I don't think it's sustainable. But it may do the trick for someone else until they can learn how to incorporate higher calorie things in reasonable portions.
And well.. there is something that tells you how many calories are in your muffin or cup of carrots: MFP. Enter it into the app and it does it all for you. So, you know, mfp IS your desired label.
ETA just saying all this so that you realize that you need to tailor everything to work for YOU. Some people may only weigh calorie dense things, or only for x and y, or only a few times to learn approximate serving sizes. Others don't weigh at all. It's more accurate to weigh but not required.0 -

I definitely interpreted it that way, at least from this:I look at anything, anything at all, and just seethe. I've yelled at food. I HAVE TO WEIGH YOU.
Over the last 3 days, I have been unable to eat just about anything, because the anger I feel towards the food scale, and the food that is on it. I just get really grumpy and walk away.
My husband offered me some fudge last night, my all time favourite occasional treat, and I told him 'no, I'd have to weigh it so I know exactly how many calories it has'.
Seems like a whole lot of general anger though. If that's medication-related, then OP I'd consider talking to your doctor about it. I don't know what the medication is for, but if it's causing you issues in your life then get their opinion on what can be done about it. Could be as simple as changing the dose.
But yes, the first bolded part will make tracking intake a PITA. It's why I switched from having 3 600-700 meals a day to just eating however much I feel like each meal, and being mindful of fat in my pre-workout meals (too much = baaad news). Besides tracking protein, both by the day and by weekly intake, this is about as regimented as I get now. I will say that having some stricter policies initially probably helped me so I could focus more on certain things, get used to others, etc. Now I'm at a place where I know what works for me and doesn't, so all I need to do is just eat and log properly.0 -

Well that's not a depressing and boring way to go about weight loss

I sense that you are frustrated. Frustration arises from a thwarted intention or an unmet expectation. It seems like your method of dieting is interfering with your ability to enjoy food. When frustrated we can either change our circumstances or change our thinking. So, perhaps you could take on the challenge of working with your methods and your thinking to find a way to stay the course with a bit more ease.
Take heart in knowing that you are not the only frustrated, angry dieter. There are many. Many people who resent the number of calories they get, and get sick of counting every bite. But many continue, because it's the only thing that works for them.
Hope to see you on MFP one year from now at your goal.

Some of us -- that would be me -- hate to cook.
Plus I am getting entertainment and variety and stimulation in other parts of me life. 'More than I need in fact. Let's just say that I am never bored.

I have a chocolate protein smoothie with a raw egg, banana and kale every single day for lunch. And when I can fit it in, sultana bran for breakfast. I haven't got sick of them yet.0

I do eat the same breakfast a lot. But I'd like some variety in dinners that I prepare0

The OP indicated that weighing her food is what has brought her success, and I didn't really get from her post or her complaints that she doesn't know what she is doing or that her way isn't working. Rather she just seemed frustrated that she has to do anything at all, that she has to think about calories and controlling portions and weighing and refusing fudge because it doesn't fit in her day and longed for the days when she didn't have to think about those things and wondered whether it's worth it.
I was probably harsher than need be, but she did ask for a pep talk. And I maintain she will probably be sad if her ticker goes in the other direction because she made a rash decision to quit her plan after allowing herself to get irate at inanimate objects.
I do agree with Ana that OP should go to the doctor and let them know about these side effects of the medication, maybe they will need to adjust the dose.

Have you got the funds and time to see a therapist, or a nutritionist? Maybe it's time for a professional to give you a hand managing this.

Because you really don't know how many calories are in that brownie, or hamburger, or baked potato, etc. Once you know, and start fitting it all together to stay within your calorie goal---you have the power to choose what and how much of it to eat. You will learn that movement and exercise is your friend, and you can eat more on the days you move more. I really hope you will rethink your position, and come to realize that it liberates you if you handle it right. If not, wishing you all the best.
Very well said!
For me, it's all in my head and my attitude. I do allot of positive self talk and remind myself what food is all about.. to nourish me and can be enjoyed the right way. I read many posts over the last week and got my scale (to weigh food) and made peace with it. I am starting to love it (think my hubbies jealous, jk he's very supportive)
Op, don't give up. Maybe your having a rough start of it, but stay on the boards, read for inspiration and learning this way of life, it's a journey worth being on. More power to you and blessings your way!

After reading your additional posts, it almost sounds like your issue is more with having to cook from scratch, than with the food scale? Could you maybe look for some easier meal ideas with less ingredients for weighing? I can see this being an issue if you are doing a lot of baking.0
