New Hair vs Gym Membership POLL

I have a dillema. I saved up about £50. Don't know what to do with it.
The choices are
1. New hairstyle :-)
I haven't been to the hairdressers for years! I was thinking if I change my look it will give me the boost to carry on and I might feel better about myself :-)
2. Gym membership.
I'd like to go on Pay As You Go terms. It's about £45 for introduction and then is £6 each time I go for a session.
Obviously I would like to do both.
I've never been to the gym so I don't know if I like it. I've lost 40ish lbs now just by cardio so it would be good to tone up and have athletic body - eventually :-)
Please help me make a choice .... It is killing me having that money in my purse ;-) ;-) ;-)

I do feel guilty for not spending this on my children but I really have to do this for myself.
So which one should I go for??

Will you be able to spend that extra £6 often?
If not, then gym doesn't sound like smart option.
You can do resistance training at home, with body weight only or some dumbbells - maybe you could spend the money on that.
My vote: if you go to the gym at least once a week (paying extra £24 a month) then gym, if not, spend the money on hairstyle0 -
A new hair style still requires being recut to maintain it so unless you can afford to have it done monthly, it may be better to keep your style simple for now.
If possible, invest in some handweight or other items that you could use for muscle building at home. You could buy a video where the person uses them so you'd get a workout and would easily maintain your lifestyle. It sounds like you do exercise videos so spruce up the collection - spoil yourself with some new equipment and new cardo + weights video.0 -
If you have only been able to save £2 a week, then I don't see how you would be able to afford £6 per session at the gym.
Also - that sounds like a crappy deal to me...£45 joining fee and £6 each visit?! That is crazy expensive. Go to your local council Sports Centre and you will most likely find a much better deal than that and potentially good equipment as well. My friends pay £15 per month and can go as often as they like. No joining fee or tie in. By that costing, as long as they go 3 times per month they are already saving and that is without taking into account the joining fee.
Whatever you do, don't join that gym! There are good deals to be had out there and that is not one of them.
Given those as the 2 options, I say do your hair. But my real answer is hidden option 'c'. But a dumbell and weights set and do some home weights.0 -
Volunteer to be a hair model for a classy chain of hairdresser to get a fashionable cut for next to nothing. I did that for years and still do when I'm short of cash.
If you can only afford £2 a week you may not be able to go to the gym often enough to make it worthwhile. Invest in second hand exercise DVDs and dumbbells - Gumtree is good for second hand exercise equipment. Or take up running - all you need is decent trainers.
Then spend the money you've saved on the new clothes you'll need because you've lost weight!0 -
You have saved hard for your £50. Everybody will give good advise based on what they would do.
Which do you WANT to do? I know you may think that you SHOULD do the gym, but which is going to make you feel better about yourself?
Yes maybe there are cheaper gyms and maybe you could find a cheaper way of getting your hair styled, but if it is a straight choice then go for the one you WANT.
Everybody around you makes demands on your time and your money. This is yours for you to spend.0 -
I agree with Monica, that you might consider investing in some hand weights (that you can add weight to) to begin toning at home.
Gyms make almost all of their money from people who never go back after the first three months.
You might also ask the gym if you can have a one day pass to see if you like it.0 -

I will have a look around for some weights and dvd's.
I thought gym would be nice for 'the atmosphere' and the motivation - being around people who does similar things as I do.
But you are right. I might never use it again and £45 is a lot of money.
Whatever money I have left I can always use it for haircut for Christmas :bigsmile:0 -

Most gyms will offer a free trial visit, or even a 5-7 day pass for you to go and try it out. Look out for these and make use of them. This will give you a chance to try it out without committing. Sometimes they offer really good deals too, for example we joined our local David Lloyd last year when they did a £14 for 14 days in the summer hols (and the kids could join for £7. They have a great pool so we all used that a lot, and I used the gym several times.
Lots of fitness programmes online to give you ideas too.
