Do Carbs include fiber?

Folks,

If I look at something that, say, is marked with 10 carbs and 5 fiber, does that mean 10 carbs + 5 fiber, or 5 non-fiber carbs + 5 fiber carbs?

  • If you're counting carbs, you take the total number of carbohydrates and subtract the dietary fiber to get the total number of net carbs.

    Look up counting net carbs. It can make a low carb diet much easier to maintain

    Just a point of clarification - soluble fiber is partly digestible, to what degree is not known - but I agree with the above posters - just take total carbs - fiber - track it on here and you get a much better reflection of your true carb and calorie intake.

    There's an add-on you can install for Firefox that allows you to track net carbs and it provides a pie graph of your net carb to fat to protein intake by calories and grams. It's pretty cool. Visualizing the information in summary form using graphs and charts sometimes creates a bottom line of what you are doing.

    Just a thought.
  • Currently on a keto diet. You'll definitely want to look at you net carbs to find out what you're truly ingesting.

    I believe the initial question was regarding the app. I have the same question. Is the app subtracting the fiber, or do we need to subtract them ourselves?

    You're all right, but cywillis is most right: what my question is, is the app pre-subtracting the fiber count, or do we do it ourselves afterwards? If we do it ourselves afterwards, then the real net carbs is much lower than the figure given by the app, which would b e much more encouraging.

    My carb stats so far today are:
    Carbs (total) = 19 g
    Fiber = 13 g
    Sugars = 7 g

    So either the myfitnesspal app can't do sums, or fiber is pre-subtracted (unfortunately).
