What nobody tells you about losing weight

So, over the last couple of weeks, when I've been out running I have had random cars toot at me and people wave. I'm 99% sure they're not people I know, but I'm not very good at recognising people in a flash as they drive past!
My first thought is always "am I having some kind of clothing malfunction?" But nope, not so far *phew*. Previously it was always people shouting insults at the fat woman wobbling down the street. 25kg later and I still feel like that person and can't imagine anyone would want to pay me a 'compliment' while I'm out running, as I still have a way to go before I hit my healthy weight range (~10kgs).
So I guess my 'thing they never tell you about losing weight' is that you'll be perpetually confused by people's reactions as your body changes!
I don't though, because that would be weird.

Hi everyone, I just want to say this thread is really helpful. I'm only 26/135 down. This is inspiring and really motivating.43

With all due respect, as the daughter and niece of longtime wheelchair bound women (advanced MS), you are incorrect in your statement. The only handicapped-related facility that is exclusively for handicapped users (and is thus protected by law) is handicapped parking. Ramps, toilets, elevators, support bars, and so on are available for use by anybody, including the able bodied. They are made available because some handicapped people are not physically able to use the regular facilities or entrances, stairs, etc., but they are not reserved for the exclusive use of disabled people. If the handicap bathroom stall is the only one available, I will use it with no qualms or guilt whatsoever, and I know that my mother and aunt would not begrudge that in the slightest. Now, if there is a disabled lady waiting for a stall, I would certainly leave the handicap stall open for her, but only in the same way as I would encourage an elderly lady to go ahead of me in line. It's common courtesy, not entitlement. I'm sorry, but as one who lives closely with disabled people, I find your attitude disappointing.271 -
As I lose weight in my face, the family jowls become more prominent.22

That as you get smaller, the pockets in your pants get smaller too. I can barely get my iphone with the case in my back pocket.33

Well right now my pockets are just getting closer and closer together. But since they are almost overlapping on some of my pants I guess it is about time to get some new ones.12 -
That sometimes you end up more self conscious...
Before when I would go out of the house, I'd throw whatever on... I didn't care how it made me look...
Now I go through about 10 outfits every time we leave the house because I feel like I look awful in all my clothes... In stead of being just round, I have these curves and lumps (mainly my love handles)
I'm hoping this goes away when I get to my ultimate goal (half way there).

I love this thread because I notice weird things all the time:
-I don't need to use the exceptionally large bath towels I bought because they are the only ones that covered me
-I don't have to lift up rolls to shave certain intimate parts
-I can snap my bras much more easily
-I feel smaller in people's arms when they hug me
-I have to stop myself from saying things to people who talk about losing weight but then walk in my office with a piece of cake
-I no longer have perpetual heartburn
-I snore significantly less (I'm told lol)
-I got rid of many toxic people and situations
-Figuring out that most of the reasons I held on weight, or ate like crap was emotional and dealing with those issues from my past
-Sometimes this journey is lonely as you realize the people you were around before are negative and subconsiously liked you fat, so you removed yourself.....or they removed themselves because hearing about calories, the gym and your success bothers them....or you just ran out of time to connect between the gym and the grocery and the rest of life
-how my mom would try to take credit because of the "constructive criticism" she's given me for years about my weight
-Not recognizing my own body in the mirror sometimes
-finding a zest for challenging myself with this journey and in other things
I am sure I'll think of more, but this is it for now.....congratulations to everyone on this
"wild ride" with their successes:)112 -

I completely agree with toxic people and situations, I've chosen to cut people out of my life because they have been emotionally draining me! Pouring out their problems and issues, never listening back, it was the best thing I've done, I didn't realise how much time I spent on others, now I concentrate that time on myself and I'm more the person that I want to be in more ways than one.

This resonates so much with me! Question: did you have to point blank tell people, or did they just slowly figure it out? I have one friend who just doesn't seem to be getting the hint...5 -

How runny your poo gets if you eat loads of veggies
To be honest my poo hasnt been fluffier xD
This is news to me. I didn't even know girls did that... especially pretty ones.15 -
-feeling more energetic
-when you start taking care of yourself ,it boosts your self confidence
-developing food awareness
-I've also noticed that I am getting a little bit judgmental about people who doesn't care about their bodies (which is bad...)
-From time to time you have to choose training before having a good time (depends on the situation of course)
-Also when you start taking care of yourself ,you inspire other people to train / to have healthier habits . Which inspires you to continue doing what you do (beautiful circle )

Like many others, I check myself out now. So often.
And I really do miss those days where I gave not a single thought to food other than, "what do I want to eat" leading to my eating that thing.22 -
I just realized that I was spending so much time on people that didn't care about me......I would call them and meet them for dinner or for drinks.....they never contacted me or asked about me when I didn't initiate.....so eventually the problem just took care of itself.....now when those people say "how are you?" I answer, but never reciprocate with "how are YOU" because I truly don't care.....they didn't care when it mattered to me42

I'm back after losing a bunch and gaining a lot of it back. I've lost 14 lbs to date since my return in January this year, and even 14 pounds makes a difference to the fit of my pants, to the point where I've bought a couple of pairs in the next size down which I can do up but wouldn't wear yet because of muffin top.
The "family jowls" comment is too true, but I'd rather have those than a potato head.
I do remember at my lowest weight that baths were not my friend because of being bony (omg bony lol). I doubled up a yoga mat and put it in the bath to sit on, which helped, but the stupid thing is buoyant! This led to it trying to escape me when I shifted my weight, so I need to find a new solution to that "problem".
I can't help thinking there must be an answer to the feeling cold all the time. I had this too. I think it might have something to do with how much fat you have in your diet, so this time around I'm going to experiment with reducing carbs and increasing fat, just to see if I'm right. There are billions of thin/normal weight people in this world who don't have to wear warmup gear in the summer, so if, as one person posted, someone has this problem 7 years later, there must be something else going on.10 -
Being cold all the time....it hasn't gotten better with time for me. I lost the majority of my weigth 7 years ago AND I"M STILL COLD ALL THE TIME!
The sensitivity to cold is a result of the body's defense mechanisms trying to return to the previous body fat levels. It's likely permanent in at least some people, probably most. It's a result of your skeletal muscles becoming about 20% more efficient to reduce metabolism in an effort to conserve energy and so restore body fat reserves. See the literature of Dr. Liebel of Columbia University Medical Center and Dr. Hirsch of Rockerfeller Hospital.
I have it, too.22 -
Love this thread! (Down 30, 15 more to go...)
After I finished a group class at the gym (LOVE Body Pump), I was talking to the instructor in the walkway. It was humorous to realize that we got into an argument that was something like: "no, that cute guy is checking you out..."
With the really in-shape instructor!

This has been the most positive thread to read! No one ever told me:
...How silently frustrated I will get with others who claim to be trying to lose weight but are doing it in a completely unhealthy way.
...How family and friends can be hit or miss for support. Some are awesome, others not so much.
...How much fun I would end up having strength training with a personal trainer. I was always a cardio girl. I didn't truly push myself (wonder why I didn't have long term success before) so I decided to get serious and hired a trainer. I may refer to him as Trent the Upper Arm Nazi or Trent the Glute Gestapo depending on the day of week it is but in all reality, I can't wait until my next butt kicking!
...How obsessed I would become with researching, planning and weighing my food.
...That some threads can become toxic and you should never ask about clean eating!
...How many wonderful people there are out there having the same struggles I am. They are motivating, inspirational and I am glad to have them as friends!

This my second time around losing the weight. Lost 100 lbs once and I was so pleased with the way I looked then, that all I wanted to do was dress myself up with nice clothes and sparkly jewelry! I bought so much jewelry it was unreal. Ran up a big credit card bill! LOL! My husband was about ready to kill me! BUT boy was HE happy with the way I looked! Don't get me wrong, he loves me even with the extra padding, but, well you know what I mean! On the other hand, I had a friend that lost a lot of weight the same time I did and her husband became terribly jealous and accused her of cheating when other men paid attention to her. She had a really hard time there for a while.15

Yes!!! sometimes I never reach my calorie goals and just don't feel like eating anymore !!TeresaMarie2015 wrote: »- That eating healthy, veggies & low fat, lean meats) can mean eating a lot of food - some days I am just tired of eating, and still don't reach my calorie goal.
- Those who have seen me go up and down over the years are not saying anything about my weight loss (and they never say anything about the gains either)
- Working out makes you smaller even when the weight loss is not so great.
- Sometimes your friends need to change to enable your goals (aka no more drinking night out with the girls.)

I started my journey last June - and saw a dietitian, and then decided to go to a weight loss clinic / bariatric medical practice, that does everything, natural nutrition diets, exercise diets, medifast diets, high protein diets, adipex, and surgery. The clinic prepared me for people being surprised once my weight loss started to show. it was wonderful being with people who walked and are walking in my shoes. I was given the tools and support - with which ever program (s) would work for me.
-
- BUT I was not prepared for the extremely nosey questions.
I don't mind the how did you loose it, what's your secret - what diet are following. These are to be expected.
But how much weight did you loose? - what did you weigh? what ado you weigh now? what medication did you take? my all time favorite, which surgery did you have? The assumption that I could not do it without surgery offends me, because those same people would also judge me if I did have surgery, for not being able to do it on my own.
So if I did or did not will remain my business. Think what you want....I selected the journey that was best for me!!!30 -

This is so true, my mom has double hip replacements and many vertebrae fused. She needs it. I have bad scoliosis and balance issues, as a family with two disabled persons this irks me to no end.
