my other half is following calories with me, currently he weighs 264 pounds, he has been sticking to 2000 calories a day at home, he does 1hour cycling a day to work and also has started running every day so he is burning lots of calories. What is a good net figure for him to aim for. Today he has a net of 1250 after exercise, which I suggested is to low for a 6ft man. (he is also diabetic so needs to maintain blood sugar levels to! any guidance please

Well I am a female but I am 6ft tall and I currently weight 233 (started at 289) the program gives me a daily intake goal of 1950 but I reduced it to 1600 but I would say he should hit at least 1900 net ....hope this helps.

As a rule, 1200 is the minimum for WOMEN and 1500 is the minimum for men. I truly think 1200 calories for a man is waaay too low.

I weighed 289 when I started and Im down to around 260. My daily calorie goal is 1670 per day and I try to net at least 1400 a day and that has been working so far. I average 4 to 5 lb weight loss per week. Let me know if that helps.

I am of course a guy, am trying to lose 2# per week. Little bit tough. :) They are suggesting that my calorie intake is 1360. Any exercise that I do, I do not count on the calories. I just always try to eat something less than the 1360. Currently I weigh 227 and am 6'. Hope this helps.

I am 6'4" and currently at 235 lbs. My daily recommended calories from MFP is 1,610 plus my burned calories. Right or wrong, I am currently leaving about a 300-500 daily deficit until I get closer to my "healthy" BMI.

He should be eating back most of his exercise cals and netting close to the 2000 that MFP suggests for him.

The American Diabetes Association has nice online tool to help provide healthy meals geared toward individuals with diabetes. http://www.diabetes.org/food-and-fitness/food/my-food-advisor/

But with diabetes he should really coordinate any diet plan with his doctor.

he is seeing the doctor, but has increased his exercise quite alot, so I keep thinking he need to keep his bloods steady whilst exercising. If he does to much exercise with out enough food he may fall ill, its just hard to find a balance, I was really wondering what the minimum NET is for a man, I know 1200 is for women, I dont want him to go below the minimum requirements for a man! All we can do is try it out at the moment

    hope that makes sense?

Men should never go below 1500 NET bare minimum.
Men have more needs than we do, not just because they are generally taller and heavier, but because of their higher muscle percentage too.
A woman and man of the exact same height and weight will STILL have calorie needs a few hundred apart, with the man's being higher.

But that # is not a rock .... I get cranky, tired, lightheaded, lose no weight if I regularly net under 1400 or so. So 1200 Net means nothing to me. Go by what MFP suggests based on current weight and activity level and not by an arbitrary # set out there to cover 50% of the entire population of the world. It doesn't really work like that. ;)

I want him to eat his daily allowance and all his exercise calories to lose slowly but surely and never risk falling ill. I was hoping that this thread would convince him that I am right!

I have just started him a profile -

its says 1920, calories a day

take his exercise which it says is 700 ish, leaves 1220 net, which is less than me a day! I want him to eat the 700 in addition!!

I think I will have to make him do as he is told lol

My daughter is type 1 and mother in law in type 2 on insulin. I think his salorie intake is on the low side but my advice is for him to see his doctor or diabetes nurse. They will be delighted that he is losing weight but I am guessing they will want to adjust his insultin. Is he on the pump or needles? My daughter's pump can come with a continuous monitoring device that will warn you (and your pump) when sugars are dangerously low or high. Maybe it is an option that he can look into.
Losing weight can reduce the need for insulin in type 2s. Finally, calories is really not what he needs to be concerned about - for diabetics it is carbs. Protein and fat in your meals is important too because it allows sugar to enter your body more slowly and reduces sugar highs and lows. Please have him see a doctor, nurse or diatician who deals with diabetics for a plan that will work for him. He needs more specialized advice than this site can give. Good luck!

The number will vary. I would suggest getting a HRM to see how many calories he burns during exercise. Then you need to calculate his Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). Simple put BMR + Exercise - 300 = daily intake. I would highly suggest some heavy weight training for your husband. The more muscle he has, the more he can control his insulin. There are several people on the other forum I belong to that has been able to stop taking medicine for diabetes. Now, I will note, I am no doctor nor do I know that much about diabete's but it might be helpful like it has for others.
