Anyone else out there have this problem... I can't fall asleep at night... I could stay up till midnight, but go to bed between 10-11pm, with my new energy but for the life of me I can't get out of bed in the morning. It's getting worse everyday. I now get up at 6:50 and have to be out the door by 7:30 and I have 3 boys to get up as well.. and have to rush them because mommy can't get up!! I don't have to feed them breakfast as I drop them off at my mom's in the morning and she feeds them. But I do need to make my coffee and my lunch... (sometimes I need to make theirs if grandpa isn't home at lunch....) Any suggestions on this???

    prep your coffee and lunch the night before. Drink Chamomile tea before bed. Try reading for a few minutes to get your mind off things while you are in bed. Helps me a lot.

    Here are some common ideas:
    • Cut back on caffiene after 3pm.
    • Take a melatonin around 8.
    • Don't eat anything heavy after dinner.
    • Don't exercise after dinner.
    • Try Valerion Root tea with honey.
    • Don't use the computer before bed.
    • Take a hot shower before bed.
    • Get some lavendar sleep spray for your pillows (or some incense too)

    it would help if we knew when you are exercising. if you are exercing a couple of hours or sooner before bedtime then it isn't good. your body doesn;t have time to uncharge itself from the high exercise is giving you. most sites i have visited say it's best to exercise in the morning while your stomach is semi empty. it is supposed to improve your burn. i can't get myself to do that though. i do it in the afternoon between 4 and 6. that way i have time to rest and make dinner after i am finished. most nights my bedtime is 10 but sometimes i am so tierd i sack out watching tv around 7 or 8.

    for me that issue is generally either trying to fit too much into the end of the day or just my brain not shutting up and letting me go to sleep.

    The "i cant wake up" issue is almost always not enough sleep. You could try setting the clock a half hour earlier or later to see if it is just your sleep cycle but generally you just need to sleep more.

    The only way I've found to get the brain under control is meditation. Not the trendy stuff but the type that teaches you to calm the mind and body and ultimately stop thinking when you need too.

    Though now and then working out with some seriously heavy cardio and a hot shower do the trick as well. Psychical exhaustion leads to sleep, sleep cures mental exhaustion.

    While some people would say I'm dependent on them, I don't fall asleep (or stay asleep) without taking Tylenol PM each evening. I've done this since my husband's diagnosis and subsequent death from a brain tumor (diagnosis March 1999, death October 2000).
    I also cut back my coffee to none after 11 AM, and that has helped too.

    I have been trying to get my excercise done in the morning but because I can't get up I have been doing it right after work... so done at 6. Then make diner for the family...

    I used to have this same problem... here is what the deal was with me.

    When I went to bed at night I would stay up watching tv in my bed or watch a movie and then try to go to sleep. Someone told me to stop watching tv in my bedroom and only use my bed for sleeping. so I stopped watch9ng tv in my bedroom. When it is time for bed I lay down, my husband turns on Sportscenter and I fall asleep. It has to do with something about how your body eventually will know that when you lay in bed, it is time for sleep and it worked so well for me. I also told my mom to do it and it worked for her too and she never could fall asleep. So now, as soon as I lay in my bed I get drowsy.

    I dont know if it works for everyone but it did for me. Good Luck!!

    I'm making assumptions here, but it's not you, I bet it's those three very active boys you mention in your profile. I have just one to get to bed and it takes an hour and a half. I'm ready to pull my hair out by the time her lights go out. I can't imagine getting three to bed each night. We started limiting her before bed activites and snacks. No sugar after dinner, no TV after 7:30 PM, and in bed by 8:30, although she can read for a bit if she wants before lights out. Sometimes it's still a struggle, but putting my foot down has led my daughter to get a better night's sleep, so she's doing better in school. I now have time to do a few things before I turn in, and I'm not so wired. Infinitely helps my sleep. Now, I don't know you or your kids, who might be the model kids in town. If that's the case, please don't take offense to my suggestions.

    One other suggestion: see an ear/nose/throat specialist to see if you have sleep apnea. My daughter used to wake up each night multiple times and getting her up for school was impossible. Her tonsils and adenoids were huge, and having them removed has vastly improved her sleep.

    Thank you!! Yes they are very active! My 14 yr old goes to bed AFTER me.... His bedroom is downstairs so he is to go down in his room when I put the other 2 to bed. And they share a room!! So yes some days I am ready to pull out my hair.... Their bedtime is 8:30 as well but lately been more like 9:30 10 before they are in bed and I don't hear them anymore... I get the 11 year to read for a bit and let the 9 year old calm down a bit. I find I don't have much me time at night anymore with these bedtime struggles. Would explain my lack of sleep!!

    I second the melatonin suggestion--about 2 hours before you want to be asleep. Also, I highly recommend the sleep hypnosis downloads by Erick Brown. I was very skeptical at first, but I'm telling you, I have been using it off and on for 6 months, and I still can't tell you how it ends because I'm asleep by 15-20 minutes into it.
