replacing the favourites...

Just did my food diary and I need help replacing a couple of things! Most days I have a salad, including tinned baby beetroot which I've discovered is much higher in sugar than I expected! So, this being one of my favourite parts of the salad (the other is feta which is going right out the door!) I need to replace it with something equally tangy and similar in texture. Any ideas??
If you're wondering - salad also includes: baby spinach, mushrooms, tomatoes, mixed beans, salmon and avocado.

Why can't you have feta? Maybe just have less of it?
Could you do your own beetroot? Buy fresh and cook up.0 -
Yes, why do you need to replace? Are you going over your calorie allowance?
Read the labels on different brands and types (ie goat vs cow vs sheep) of feta, there can be quite a difference.0 -
I'm cooking just for me, and on quite a strict budget. A tin of beetroot costs $1, but a bunch quite a bit more...
Feta - I use 100g over the whole salad (5 days worth) and it's surprising how many calories it has! I'm targeting what foods are high cal, and not really necessary. Beetroot on the other hand is something I've always had in my salads. They don't taste quite right without it...
totally off topic - Tiptoethruthetulips is that Purakanui falls in your photo??0 -
Nony_Mouse - It puts me quite a bit over...0

Can you open your food diary?
I am confused you use 100gms feta over five days? So 20gms feta each day?

Ok - The point of this wasn't about the feta - it's about beetroot. I want to replace the beetroot in my salad with something similar in tang and texture.0

Too much calories in a salad because of beets and 20 grams of feta? It sounds like you taking the calorie counting to extremes. Can you open your diary?0

Hi All - no not opening my diary - I just want to find a replacement for beetroot!0

Have you tried buying the ready cooked vacuum packed rather than tinned? It is usually lower in sugar and can be bought with or without vinegar. I adore beetroot in all forms and ended up growing my own - even cheaper...0

Maybe change up your salad dressing to include something tangy? Maybe try apple cider vinegar?
That being said, I wouldn't say cutting your beetroot is a great idea. Beetroot is actually really good for you (http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=49) and if you're having problems shifting the pounds, a bit of beetroot on your salad probably isn't the problem to be honest...0 -

Okay, I have no suggestions then. But 100g of Puhoi Valley feta (assuming you're in NZ since you mentioned Purakaunui Falls) has 967 kj/230 cal, an entire 240g tin of Watties baby beetroot has 766 kj/182 cal. That's really not a lot. You're not mixing up kilojoules and calories are you? Also, the sugar in the beetroot is from the carbs most likely (their website doesn't give the ingredients), so just ignore it. The sugar thing on here is stupid, added sugar should be watched, sugar from carbs is fine.0 -
I don't worry about sugar overly esp when it is from fruit & veg. Just keep the beetroot.0

Thanks juleszephyr that is really helpful! I'll look into the vacpac', see if my local stocks it!0

why not just reduce the amount you use?
i love salad dressing and just use less now than i used to.0 -

Whilst I agree with not needing to replace beetroot - try caperberries, olives etc
as for feta cheese, add salt0 -
But what is wrong with beets and feta? I had a bunch of salads with those two and smoked salmon last week and they fit just fine in my day.
Your goal must be way too low if you can't fit THAT in.0 -
Thanks rabbitjb.. Again very helpful. I've never heard of caper berries, are they just like capers?
For all who are criticizing my decisions, please just don't bother posting. You are not of help.0 -
Hearts of palm! Low-cal, nice texture and tanginess, great in salads with your other ingredients. Comes in a tin (or can depending on your continent). Or jarred artichokes...0

No one critisied your decisions, we gave you suggestions to see if you could just continue to have those things instead of giving up stuff you like. If you want to make what may be unnecessary sacrifices, be my guest. But don't worry, I won't be responding to anymore of your threads .0 -

This is what I was going to say.
But I agree, you don't need to cut out the beetroot just because it's a little higher in sugar. Sugar won't prevent you from losing weight as long as you are within your calorie goal. I don't even track my sugar (I found tracking fiber more useful). Especially since the MFP goal for sugar is based on added sugar, but the way the database is set up, it does not distinguish between added sugar and naturally occurring sugar.0 -
