How many calories are ideal, the new update is confusing me!! HELP!!

I just updated this app. Now when I put in my goals as let's say maintaining my weight. I get a ridiculous amount of calories per day (1675). I'm pretty sure I'd start packing on the pounds! I'm 5'7 and 139 pounds. May be wrong... This seems very high to me! Maybe someone could tell me!? And just playing around I put my activity level at sedentary for that calorie number. Not only that but when I change my goal from 1-2 pounds per week I get 1200 cal/day.

It sounds riduculously low for maintenance.....I'm 5'8 and have only 20lbs to lose, and I lose on 1600 per day....0
-
I'm 5'1" 130(ish) and eat around that to lose about a pound a week so no that doesn't seem high for you at all0

At 5'7 and 139 pounds and sedentary, 1675 is probably right for maintenance. That's not high at all.

Yes agree with everyone.
And yes if they give you 1675 to maintain then you would get 1200 to lose 1-2lbs a week.0 -
Why do you think it is too high?0

Ohh me too (ish)0 -
1675 is pretty close to TDEE for a sedentary 27-28 year old who who is 5'7" & 139 pounds. For one pound of loss you'd get -500 that so that would be 1175, but myfitnesspal tends to have a net calorie floor of 1200... so 1,200 for loss and 1675 for maintenance.
Sounds right to me.0 -
Those maintenance calories are actually pretty low. I'm 5'11, 152 and mine are nearly 1900 on a sedentary setting. I lose 1/2/week on 1610.
You won't "pack on pounds" with 1675. The more aggressive your weight loss goal the lower the calorie settings are. You are at a healthy weight so if you want to lose I'd advise you to set it at .5lbs/week and lift weights for more of a body recomp. Do you know your body fat percentage? You may want aim to get that down, not the scale #.0 -
That sound's like a normal number. I'm 5'11" 156, lightly active and I get 1650 to lose.0

I think it's too high iron feline, because of what the app used to tell me right before I updated. To lose 1-2 pounds/week I was at 840 cal/ day.... That's a pretty big difference!!!0
-
I am 5' 6", 130 lbs, fairly sedentary (other than moving around walking to the bus and maybe a bit at lunch) and I lose weight on 1600. You could probably maintain on 1900-2000.0

There was a "glitch" in the system that got fixed. You should never eat below 1200/day. Especially at your height. Shorter people can get away with eating lower, but not much lower.
Eating at 840 will leave you with out muscles and really skinny fat, and no one wants that.0 -
The app was having some issues before the update where it was giving people sub-1200 cal/day. 1200 is supposed to be the bottom limit.0

No wonder I've been very dizzy and felt like I would pass out for over two weeks!0

That's a glitch. There's no way it should have given you calories that low.

MFP will not give you a goal of less than 1200 cals unless you manually entered it. It is difficult to get the required fat, protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals on a diet of less than 1200 cals, and even then you would have to be very strict to get your requirements. You have a little mre wiggle room if you eat more.
That said if 840 was to lose 2 lbs/week that mean your maintenance is 1840, so to lose 1 lb/week you would need 1340 cals/day.
You should pick the proper weekly goal for how much you have to lose:
If you have 75+ lbs to lose 2 lbs/week is ideal,
If you have 40-75 lbs to lose 1.5 lbs/week is ideal,
If you have 25-40 lbs to lose 1 lbs/week is ideal,
If you have 15 -25 lbs to lose 0.5 to 1.0 lbs/week is ideal, and
If you have less than 15 lbs to lose 0.5 lbs/week is ideal.

It might not be as off as you think. I'm 53, female, 139 pounds, and I maintain on anywhere from 1990 to 2300 calories a day, depending on my cardio activity level.
At 139 pounds, you certainly don't have much to lose (if you are trying to lose), so 1200 calories would be way too low for you. I'd set my goals to lose a half pound a week, which I believe might put you somewhere around 1500.0 -

No, something is wrong here. I know the app was acting up and putting people on really low calories, but that was a big error. I certainly hope you weren't eating that few calories.
The calories are not too high.0 -

That is beyond wrong and a massive bug in mfp system at the moment.
The las test numbers are closer to correct. Please please don't eat only 840 calories a day.
Please.0 -

I've honestly been doing just that for over two weeks!0 -
That is my maintenance level at 5'2" and that's cause I sit on my butt all day long at work, seems low for maintenance at 5'7".0

Actually it was going below 1200 for a large number of people as it was a bug in the last upgrade.0 -

I have a desk job but make sure to get 10k steps per day. I'm 5'5.5", 125ish pounds, 40 years old. Maintenance for me is around 1800ish.
The required deficit is 500 calories per pound - so if you're starting at 1675 then of course you get 1200 if you put in a goal to lose 1+ pounds per week. Though in reality, are you sedentary? If this is not the right activity level, then don't choose it just because you're afraid to eat. If you ARE sedentary - put .5 pounds as a goal. Should assign 1425 to eat. Then feel free to eat some additional when you workout.I just updated this app. Now when I put in my goals as let's say maintaining my weight. I get a ridiculous amount of calories per day (1675). Before I updated, I couldn't change my calorie amount/day at all!!!0 -
