I can think of a useful application. Many diet studies are hampered because they depend on accurate self reporting by the participants. We also tend to over/ under estimate what we are eating.

It would be great to nail down if those who self report that they can't lose on reduced calories alone, have a legitimate concern.

I don't understand how the device tells them anything other than how many times one chews and swallows?

That would be awesome and so helpful for days like today where I go to a buffet. Went to a new Chinese place in town and the food was awesome, but no calorie information for any of it.

There are plans for a microwave-type thingy that does that when you put your food in it. I can imagine a future, which I more likely will not get to see, where all plates and glasses will have a chip that measures calories, macros, micros.. etc and syncs them to some global personal health device.

That's all I took away from it too, unless I missed something? How many times I chew and swallow won't really help me a whole lot. I mean, cheetos and carrot sticks are both little orange sticks but they have different nutrient profiles and I would imagine I'd have to chew the carrots a lot more. Plus, that thing was ugly and I'm not wearing it.

I thought the same thing - how does it know? I'm going to be watching this thing just because I'm curious. But you are right - that this is super ugly! Must have been made by a man - but even for a man it's ugly!

How on earth can it tell the difference between someone chewing chicken and someone chewing pork? Or between any food for that matter? Did I miss something? So if I chew a peach and a pear (tried to compare two food with same texture but different calorie counts) the same amount of times and swallow the same, wouldnt it register as the same food even though they have a different calorie count?

I guess for people who don't monitor their eating frequency it could be a useful tool to let them know that they are eating more often than they think they are. (Think TV programme Secret Eaters)

But it doesn't count calories so you could eat a very large salad and it might tell you that you are eating too much as it counts chews and swallows. But you could eat a huge piece of chocolate cake and it could register as within your allowance.

Also I would be concerned that instead of changing what people ate it would just encourage them to eat less and less to bring the graph down also they could set their goal too low and they would end up starving themselves to reach it.

My guess is since the article said it sends information to an app, that people have to enter the food they are eating into the app, but that's just a guess.
