How do diet coke and Pepsi max taste good without calories/sugar?

I can't get my head around it, is it full of dangerous chemicals or something that would still ruin a diet?

So there's no downside to drinking it? Pepsi max cherry is my current poison0 -
I used to really like Coke Zero but I can't stand the taste of it now. Not sure why.0

everyone has a different opinion about whether or not diet sodas are ok to drink. my mom has a history of heart disease, and her cardiologist has BANNED her from drinking them. he said they are horrible for her health. he said the artificial sweetener is far worse than "real" sugar. if you don't have any health issues, they are probably ok. (i have also heard of some studies which said that those who consume diet sodas are less likely to lose weight, but then other studies which refute that...)0 -

no downside, but pepsi max does contain ginseng and caffeine, so it may make you jittery if you drink several cans a day, or it may not, you will just have to experiment.0 -
Opinions vary wildly on this. I, personally, don't think there is any issue drinking diet pop and generally drink 3 cans a DAY. It has not impeded my weight loss (nor did it last time, before I had my baby).0

Artificial sweeteners. Some people dislike the way they taste (I'm not that bothered by them and find non diet soda too syrupy, but I'm not a huge soda person even for diet), some think aspartame is bad for you (but I've yet to see any convincing evidence and it's so far been approved as safe, obviously), and some claim that for SOME people it may make you crave the sugar elsewhere or screw up your palate so you can't appreciate non-sweet foods. That wouldn't mean you can't lose weight, but that you would have a hard time not eating too many calories. I never had that problem and have always liked non-sweet foods just fine, so if it's a real thing for some people (might be, don't care), it doesn't seem to apply to me or many others.
TL,DR: if you are able to drink diet soda happily and are sticking to your goal calories, it's probably helping you to replace regular with diet and it won't prevent you from losing weight. I lost lots of weight drinking diet soda off and on and so did many others here.0 -
All artificial sweeteners taste bitter to me...so I avoid them like the plague. In the US, the FDA has approved as safe the use of almost all common artificial sweeteners, despite anecdotal claims to the contrary. So, you know, rock on with your Diet Cherry Pepsi if you so choose.0

I can't drink regular soda. It tastes too sweet in a nasty way. Diet all the way.0

I posted a thread on the topic in December and got some very educational responses. Check it out: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10003430/diet-pop-is-it-really-bad-for-you/p10
