Having a lot of weight to lose and clothes

For those that have a big journey ahead of them, how do you handle your wardrobe? Do most just wait to get a lot of new clothes when they have reached their final goal? What do you do if you are limited income? I'm trying to think of what to do as my clothes get more loose as time goes on and I'm at a bit of a loss. I'm rather large, and even losing some weight doesn't give me a lot of options at places like salvation army, or second hand stores (largest sizes tend to be a large).

It probably varies by location, but I've had luck at Goodwill finding stuff in my size. I also tend to buy just a little at a time, and wear belts where needed.

I have a lot to lose and I basically wait until I have dropped two sizes before I buy clothes (unless the clothes are falling off of me) to save money. I hit the clearance racks of some of my favorite stores, I may not be the most fashionable but at least my clothes are fitting better. You may want to see if there are any plus size consignment shops available in your area that you may be able to find some stuff for cheap. I also tend to buy a few new pairs of pants and twice as many tops to make it look like I have more outfits than what I really do when I go buy new clothes.

Yeah, Goodwill and Thrifty Shopper are my friends. I've also sold some items online (and depending on what size you're looking for may have some things) and have found some great deals at Macy's.

My Bariatric support group has a monthly clothing exchange which has proven invaluable. I've exchanged my wardrobe several times now. So the answer is second hand. I now can shop in regular stores at regular sales, which is a lot cheaper. Spandex is my friend. Mix and match outfits, a few basics, a neutral palette. My accessories have stayed with me.

My belt stayed with me for a while and I added four inches of new holes but then even that got ridiculous.

Looking at what's available in my community and it looks like I may need to hunt for stuff online. Yay Canada... Does anyone know any good websites for cheap mens clothing?

I have about 150-170 to lose (had, actually. I'm 90 down right now). The way I handle it is I do "milestones". For clothes that I wear around the house, I don't replace those. I just tighten the elastic/wear a belt on pants and don't mind swimming in my shirts. For clothes that I wear out, I buy second-hand from ebay. Some barely worn sub $10 nice items there. A trick I recommend, see a category you are interested in, set the maximum price to $10 (for tops I do $7 for bottoms I do $12), then sort by "ending soon" and you may able to snag a few deals right before a bid ends.

I usually replace my going out clothes every 2-3 sizes. More than 3 sizes, and it won't look good on you or be comfortable. Things like button down shirts and pants with elastic tend to be forgiving if they're a couple of sizes larger, but things like jeans tend to look horrible if they are too big. Other kinds of pants are fine with a belt, but to a point.

I don't do skirts often, but elastic a-line or medi skirts with a very stritchy elastic are a miracle! I have a skirt that I used to wear when I wore a size 26 which still fits me, and even looks better, at my current size 16, but I guess given your gender, this may not be your option of preference.

I'm sure I could rock a skirt but probably wont in public unless for a drag event or something, maybe a kilt is in order.
I may need to try ebay or amazon, of even just kijiji. It's difficult when you're a Canadian to find decent cheap clothes. You Americans definitely have it easier.

i buy as i need. thrift stores mostly, participated in a clothing swap at church today and got a couple of things, i find nice cheap stuff on ebay (got a shirt in the mail today thats SOOOO cute), local buy sell groups.....

like i said, i buy as i need it. i had to get new bras, though i did opt for sports style cami ones, as theyll fit longer LOL. my sports bras i started out with are still working fine for working out, but i can tell around the band are beginning to loosen up. fortunately, sports bras are pretty forgiving and stretchy LOL

<< Canadian. Yeah maybe spandex and skirts are out but if you scour the second hand stores you can sometimes score a deal. I had to print off a sizing chart and measure myself every couple months because I had no idea what size I was.

Oh man, Americans sure have it easier. I ship my clothes from ebay to halfway around the world through a mail forwarding company, but even then it's still cheaper than buying new clothes locally.

Value Village or Talize (both in Canada) were my go to stores -- just buy a few things when you go down a size (it is very motivating -- much more than a belt!). I went from a 20 to a 12 before I starting buying things new but I still go to the second hand stores because I learned that you can find some great clothes there -- sometimes with the original tags, never worn!

I bought 2nd hand clothes. We have a Facebook site specifically for our town residents to buy and sell goods. It was really helpful.

Do you know anyone with a sewing machine? Often dry cleaners will do some alterations. That might be cheaper than replacing.

We have the same problem. Every time I buy new clothes, after the next month or so, it's just loose again.

    I use outlet shopping stores.
Major retailers sell off end of line goods at low prices.
Currently paying £7 for chinos, £2-5 for tshirts and £7 for dress shirts.

A pair of pants that fit will make a huge difference, and will mean that shirts will look ok even if they're a big baggy. Maybe just try and keep a pair of pants and a pair of jeans in a size that's roughly right (a bit tight for a few weeks, perfect for a few weeks, too loose until you get the next set)?

I've had several pairs of pants altered when I lost a lot of weight. It's worth it if you've been able to make some good finds at the thrift store. There's a Goodwill near me in a swanky section of town that gets some well-made designer brands. I snap those pants up for $4 and probably paid about $15 each to have them taken in a couple of sizes later on. That's still way less than the original $100+ price tags (which I personally would never pay).

I go to Bethesda thrift store in my area, or some kind of thrift store. But if i can't find my size at a thrift store then i go to walmart or shopko and look on their Clearence Racks. But i usually just wear a belt until the pants looks awful with a belt. I also like to wear mainly Leggings with an oversized top until i get to my goal weight. Then i will really buy me some new clothes.

Have some shirts and pairs of pants that actually fit you, and do laundry often :) Have some shirts and pants that are a bit big that you can get away with. But ask someone else's opinion because you won't be able to believe your lying eyes

Shop the clearance racks. You'll save tons.

    Also, Thrift stores and/or Goodwill.

I found a pair of Levi's jeans that fit me really well and were on clearance at a local department store. To buy them new was too pricey when I was going through sizes in a month or two. I found used pairs in smaller sizes on eBay and ordered them, then sold them at a consignment store later (because they were still in excellent condition when I was done with them). That way I got a little money but also didn't pay much for the jeans to start with.

Perhaps you could check Walmart's clearance? Their clothes aren't the best quality, but you can find cheap clothing in large sizes. With Spring having just started, there is likely a lot of clearance items to choose from. Otherwise, check for yard sales or clothing swaps in your area.

Jeans, I bought new. (Went from a 20 to an 18 to a 16 currently) Shirts - I had a lot more to lose on the bottom than the top, but i am noticing that some of my shirts are just way too big now, so I'll probably buy cheap cotton summer shirts to get me through this summer, and by next summer I should be at or close to goal.

I have a wide range of tank tops in various colours that I use to mix and match. They are a lot cheaper to replace than blouses. And I can still use my wide range of scarves!

I've bought a couple pieces at my usual stores that couldn't wait, but I promised myself a big milestone before I did my first wardrobe replacement. I'm nearly there, and will probably do it at the thrift store for the outer stuff and pay the full price for the undies. (Forget diamonds, bras are a girls best friend.) I'll have to do that a couple times before I reach the final weight, at which point I'll go back to shopping in regular stores.

I buy at Goodwill one pair of black pants and one black skirt since everything matches. I start out buying them a bit small, and as soon as they become too large, I buy another set a bit small. Since most of my weight is around my middle, I wear button-down shirts. I'm working my way down on those, as I kept all the used shirts and pants (other than black) that I bought as I outgrew the last batch while gaining the weight. I'm not at all stylish, but I don't want to spend good money on stylish "fat clothes". When I get to my goal weight, I'm buying BRAND new stylish clothes and NOT at Walmart!!!!
