I've figured out how to beat MY pms...

So I figured out how to deal with MY PMS. I usually crave fatty, carby stuff. And lots of it. So I decided to give my body exactly what it wants...and then I still remain in my calorie goals...

I've figured it out. I eat VERY lightly for breakfast and lunch, like no more than 170 calories each. (Porridge for breakfast, chicken/tuna salad for lunch). Since my goal is 1500, I would then have 1160 left for the day. Which ALL gets spent on whatever I'm craving.

Yesterday, I ate a whole container of Nutella for dinner. The day before? A whole box of cookies. And the day before that 200g of chocolate. And no its not ideal. But I'm just doing it the week of PMS. I mellow out after that...

Doing this diminishes my cravings and allows me to stay in my calorie goals. I'll probably bump up the nutrition after this week. I repeat: Stupid PMS.

Pms sucks. No matter how much I eat, when it comes to pms, I just stay hungry. It's a real struggle lol.

Funny though, when I eat as mentioned above, I don't feel any hungrier than usual. But that would be because of all the fat in the sweets. My cravings are far worse than my actual hunger.

When Nutella sings its siren song, not much you can do about it. I love that stuff but don't have it in the house. I am not strong enough to limit it to PMS, so it can't cross the threshold.

You could also have no breakfast and have tea, then a heartier lunch and BOOM, a Feast for dinner... lol.
Just another option. I have PMDD and find that ever since I started IF in Sept. Pms cravings don't have me going over 1500 my daily allowance.

I beat mine down with dark chocolate and wine. It's the only thing that will make it submit.

I used to do that, but I cave easier if I do it, so I'd rather just have a lighter lunch and breakfast. :)

I whip up a can of 2% evaporated milk with some stevia/splenda and a couple tbsp of cocoa and throw it in my ice cream maker, after half an hour it tastes like a wendy's frosty. A giant bowl of frothy creamy goodness to settle the beast at the end of the day. If I feel extra beastly I throw in some crushed reeces pieces at the end.
  • Do you really need to eat an entire container of Nutella to satisfy a PMS craving? I get the craving for crap I truly do, but eating a massive amount like that is in my opinion going overboard.

Can you eat oatmeal for breakfast with a scoop of nutella in it? I do that if I need the chocolate fix during that time of the month. (I buy Earnest Oats Mayan Blend that has cocoa in it) and put a tablespoon of nutella in it and its great. I still eat my regular lunch (soups/salads/veggies and hummus) but I eat a single serving cookie or brownie (fiber one) or bring apples and peanut butter.

Hahaha...nah, spending 75% of your day's worth of calories on real ice cream is much better...mmm think I have an idea for tomorrow's feast.... magnum pints are only 800 calories....

I will be 47 in several months and I was able to stop a lot of crappy and bad signs of PMS and menopause.

I started drinking a lot of water (1/2 gallon plus), exercising and even moderating the "carb overloading". The water itself is HUGE in this area for me. The exercise is also huge but I think the water is a godsend.

Most woman feel terrible and I been blessed to have corrected ALOT of this. I used to sweat gallons at night, insomnia, back pain, abdominal, bloating, swelling, I used to fan my self all day long and by the time my period came I was dying...

Not anymore ... funny how changes in my diet, water and exercising really did and is still working (who knew this was "good medicine")...

I could, BUT... if I do, I eat all types of other things too and go waaaayyy over my calories. I know it's not ideal to eat like this (duh right?) But if I do, the up side is that I stay within my calorie goal and don't overeat on a bunch of other random stuff.

It's not working for me. I generally eat very healthy. It's literally just around pms time that I have cravings for a lot of stuff I normally don't crave. Like sweets and stuff.

I personally think it's great that you found a system! I crave salty sooo much! I too, will save tons of calories for those things!

I was just sharing my personal experience, not sure if this will help for others but feel free to try. I think salty cravings will much likely hit your nutritional needs easier than the sweet ones I have. I mean, a container of Nutella doesn't exactly have a lot of protein...

But it's just this one week of the month. And if it helps me stay sane and in my goals, then so be it. I shall eat healthy the rest of the month. :)

I ate half a bag of jelly beans. I blame How It's Made for that, though. XD

I normally don't get cravings, but when I do, it's for salty things, not sweet or chocolate. So I make some popcorn with a little bit of butter and LOTS of salt. Much less calories than eating a bag of Ritz Chips, even though that satisfies the craving much better!

I wish I didn't feel any hungrier, I can eat like a horse during that time. I usually can fight through, but it is so hard. And same as you, all I want are fats and sweets.

Actually I agree with the water thing. I'm usually ravenous and craving all things sweet and carby at that time of the month but recently I've been massively upping my hydration (usually lemon water) and it's helped cut the cravings a ton. I build in treats every day no matter what part of my cycle I'm on, but I've noticed that I wasn't trying to binge on treats this month or feeling constantly starved like I usually do.

However, I do tend to follow your philosophy most days - no real breakfast, but a mid-morning snack, then a modest lunch, then a filling dinner plus a dessert or afternoon treat. I seem to eat a ton and give in to sweets in the evening no matter how much I eat in the morning, and I run just fine on an empty tank for a few hours most mornings, so it works for me. I have friends who'd faint if they didn't start the morning with food, though.

This took some time to get this down... I was really suffering and had to do something and altering my diet, adding exercising and yes this load of water...

Do not get me wrong, I still do suffer around that time of month a little bit but I actually feel crappy by loading up on the excess "carby" foods.

It is a personal choice how you handle the cravings, the pain, the discomfort..and it takes time to stay diligent in order to discover if changes or alterations in your lifestyle will work or not..

I found relief after four months when trying to loose 10 pounds which helped elevate discomfort as well in lugging around extra pounds.

Good luck and hopefully this is your new found remedy!

I'm also eternally grateful that I don't get PMS cravings. I get PMS crazy, but I don't want to eat things. Just yell and cry ;)

I guess the carbs don't bother me, I'm usually so far under on them during the rest of the time. Maybe that's why I crave them haha.

I kind of don't eat them usually because they don't fill me up. Bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, fruits ect, they're all just a waste of calories to me. My normal meals are mostly meat and non starchy veggies.

I wish I was like that - but if my self control is half as bad as it is with food around that time...I'm sure I'd end up in jail for murder...

I'm glad it's helping, but it sounds a lot like binge-eating to me. Just make sure you keep on top of things...habits like that have a tendency to creep up on you and could spiral out of control if you're not really careful...what is PMS except a time when you feel bad and really want calorie-dense foods? What happens when you've had a bad day or are a bit sick? What about where you end up eating a bigger lunch than you've planned for?

I do overdo it on my periods as well...I crave cake and fatty fried food and bread and lots of it. Moderation is rough for me and I have a tendency to binge (and then feel bad because it's not that I wanted what I've eaten so badly, it's just that I've eaten a lot of what I've wanted just because I feel that I should).

I find that if I eat a portion or two of what I've been craving, the cravings subside to the extent that I can deal with them as if they were normal cravings and not bloody hangry emotional cravings.

It's in reverse with me. If I give in, I want more. The cravings get stronger with the taste, not weaker. That's why when I usually crave a sweet or something otherwise I just buy a single serving, or don't buy it at all.

Just another option. I have PMDD and find that ever since I started IF in Sept. Pms cravings don't have me going over 1500 my daily allowance.

I wanted to chime in to say my IF experience is much the same. Since I started my cravings have been almost nil. I have had more of a problem getting myself to eat enough food because I am just not that hungry anymore, and it's easy to not eat enough calories. One good hunger headache and a sleepless night was enough to make me vigilant about it.
