Hi All

My job is currently very stressful and I've taken to dealing with this by drinking too much and having lots of takeaways. Anyone got any good tips on relaxing that doesn't involve eating a days calories in one sitting or any ways you stopped binge eating and drinking?

Thanks :)

That's a loaded question but an excellent one to ask because so many people don't realize that they deal with stress by eating and drinking!

I would suggest thinking about the things that give you joy. Do you have any hobbies? Or can you think of things you'd LIKE to do but have never tried before? Start making it a priority to do that for 30 minutes a day. Another option is to make sure you get out for some fresh air, talk to someone who gets you, meditate if that's your thing and a really great one is to journal! Just get it all down on paper anytime you feel like you want to eat or drink. Bring a journal with you everywhere and write it out. There's no way around stress, there's only THROUGH and that means dealing with it head on so while you do those stress busters, also start thinking about ways you can deal with stress at work. I don't know what you do so I can't really pinpoint but is there anyway to delegate or make a process more efficient? If it's a particular person or people, is there a way YOU can handle them better?

Lots of ideas for you! I hope it helps! Feel free to friend me and we can chat further! :D

OOOO I struggle with the drinking too much thing as well. I figure I am just going to have to start telling myself NO. Also I have kept my IDS at home so I don't get alcohol while out because I always get asked for ID. Also each day I will post privately to myself on FB why I shouldn't drink or my motivational thought so I stick with it :) I love the wine but just can't anymore! Good luck :)

My best stress relief is moving. I find it peaceful to physically work out the frustration even if it's just a walk. Hiking calms me for days.

I'm not even close to being in great shape and my weight loss journey is long yet, but I have learned moving works better than eating or drinking for me. There's also a sense of accomplishment instead of self loathing or guilt from eating and/or drinking too much.

I'm a stress eater and drinker as well but I'm starting to use meditation as a way to deal with stress. Hoping for a measurable change.

This. Prayer and meditation. I'm also starting strength training which works great. I too have a very stressful job.

Thanks for posting this. I have the same issue. I generally do well food wise during the day but evenings have been less predictable. I am trying to create a more productive evening routine for myself that does not involve alcohol. I've moved my workouts from morning to after work and I find that is helping to keep me from blowing it when I get home at night. Plus I sleep better. Now I just need to do this consistently every day. :)

When you do stress eat/drink, make sure to log it. Even when you find a new release, it's likely to happen once in a while and it's good to keep track of when, why, and how often it happens. In the middle of a binge (or when you feel it coming), ask yourself why it's happening. Go for something high protein when you feel it coming... I've been known to stress eat a boiled egg and I feel better!

As for alternatives: I find that regular exercise helps me a lot. I love biking and running, and do yoga most days to relax. I've also recently found Bach's rescue pastilles and I swear they've saved me from a few panic attacks!
