Low Fat V Low Carb

I used to think a low fat option was good for me until I realised that low fat content increases the sugar and carbs content.

About 10 years ago I went on Jenny Craig which was based around low fat eating, such as skim milk, low fat yoghurt, no bacon or fatty foods. I lost 5kg in 6 months along with alot of $$$, untill I just gave up.

Recently I went on a low carb and high fat diet, resulting in an 18kg (40lbs) weight loss in 10 weeks! I can't believe that all these years I was buying low/no fat foods and increasing my sugar intake as a result.

I now limit carbs/sugar by never eating bread, rice, pasta, potato, flour, corn, carrots, sweet potato, soft drinks, juice and I get my good carbs/sugar through vegetables and fruits.

Sugar/carbs are the devil for my metabolism. I love that I can eat as much cheese and pork crackle as I want without it affecting my weight.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

No, because I don't limit any macronutrient for the purpose of weight loss... I reduce caloric intake and just eat what I please while meeting minimum protein and fat needs for my specific body and goals.

You also lost so much because you lost water weight. If/when you return to higher carbs you will regain some water weight, and if you do not maintain the same caloric intake you will regain weight even if you are eating the same volume of food.

And yes, you CAN eat as much cheese and pork crackle with it ACTUALLY affecting your weight, because calories are king, not macronutrients. You just happen to be or were in a deficit without meaning to be.

I think that everyone has to find the nutritional lifestyle that works for them. For some like yourself low carb works great. I have had success with both, I am currently LCHF. Some people can't do, or don't like LCHF. Congrats on your success, no matter how you do it, losing weight is not easy!

I really enjoy eating low carb, but I don't think I'm as low carb as a lot of people. It really suits my preferences. I found when I ate bread and grains I would eat and eat without being satisfied. Now, I find I don't need to eat as much even calorie wise and am much more satisfied .

I have (re-)introduced higher fat foods into my diet and find that more satiating and satisfying. But I still eat grains and other starches, fruit, honey, occasional sugary treats. Try to limit artificial sweeteners.

Just want to comment on this: Sugar and other carbs do not affect your metabolism. Carbs do not hinder weight loss. Too many calories hinder weight loss. But what you eat will affect how much you will want to eat. A diet that provides all the nutrients you need and allows you to quite effortlessly eat to satiety and satisfaction, is the right diet for you. So if how you're eating now makes you happy, good for you!

So you've leaped from one fad to another fad and expect different results in the long term? Are you going to avoid these foods for the rest of your life (I very much doubt it) Also what the hell is wrong with sweet potato and carrots?

Great that you have found something that works for you. I prefer to eat everything in moderation. But personally… I find that fat does NOTHING for helping me feel full or satisfied. So, I will occasionally choose the low fat versions of things to save me some calories. It's all about finding what works for you and what you can stick with.
