Eggs vs. Egg Whites

I can't for the life of me understand why you wouldn't eat the egg yolk, it's the best bit. I can't stand the texture of egg white and only eat them in softly scrambled (whole) eggs or a tortilla or something (and cake of course). I often eat just the yolks on toast if I have some left over from making a pavlova or something. Yum. Pavolva.0

I like my egg white from the carton blended with coffee and cocoa or pumpkin for a protein shake snack. I don't like yolks for some reason but I like the whole egg scrambled. One of my sons like just the soft yolk - on a piece of toast or in a tortilla. I usually boil the egg for a few minutes. Anyone have ideas of how to get the yolk cooked soft and easy to separate? My other 2 sons like their eggs different ways too, so I frequently make eggs 4 ways a couple mornings a week. For Ethan I broil whole egg with some cheese on top. For Matthew over easy or with the hole in the bread.... Those new containers that you cook the egg in the microwave and you don't have to even scramble it but it comes out scrambled look pretty cool! Anyway, in our house the dog gets any part of the egg that isn't eaten!
Bloody hell! Really? You cook differently for all your kids? I know it's just eggs but is that true of all meals?0 -
OK, showing my ignorance here (and I am so glad for this thread!) but I was under the impression that the egg white had all the protein in and the yolk had all the fat in so I've been throwing out the yolks and just eating egg whites! God damnit....just goes to show you can't believe everything people tell you0

So that's something - the carton of egg whites is pasteurized right? It would be an alternative to whey supplement in a shake with a much frothier texture, I imagine. I'm not sure the cost breakdown would compare favorably though.

Yeah, so for a while I thought that most of the protein was in the white too. Like, almost all of it. It was only when I was plugging in my hard boiled egg snack into MFP that I thought to look and see what the impact would be if I discarded the yolks. Fewer calories, much less protein. Not worth it.

I don't like the yolks, so it was never any big deal to get rid of them. I buy the box of egg whites from Costco, so no waste there.0

I eat at least one whole egg and 9 egg whites every day. I can't eat 10 whole eggs because that would be half of my daily fat allowance before breakfast is even over.0

I buy one carton of real eggs and a carton of whites. I add extra whites to a real egg when making an omelet. It gives hubby the illusion he is eating healthy. As soon as I found out all the vitamins were in the yolk, I embraced all the egg.
This is what I do. I actually prefer the texture of one whole egg + one egg white, in terms of scrambled eggs -- whole eggs just feel a bit thick to me. But I'm a picky textural eater, lol.
That said, sometimes there's nothing I want more than an egg white and mozzarella cheese on toast. It's one of my favorite microwave breakfasts.

I don't think there is really a right or wrong answer, I do it both ways depending on my macros that day, if I have too much fat then I cut the yolk out, if I don't then I don't.0

The yolk is the most nutritious part of the egg, why not throw it away.0

My husband was horrified when came to North America for the first time and he saw egg whites in a carton. The concept of it does creep me out a lot and it's very wasteful.
An egg is like 75 calories of goodness. I eat whole eggs, but that's just me.
If I'm baking with one or the other, I make a recipe that will use the other half of the egg, or use it to bread things in panko crumbs.0 -
I don't really like the texture of hard-boiled yolks. Devil them, I'm all about it, but just eat them? Kinda grossed out. So, I tend to do two whites and one forced-down yolk in those cases.
I sometimes subscribe to the one whole egg plus whites for scrambles, but that's because I need to save those calories for extra bacon. Truth.0 -
The question seems to be about the protein content - but for me it is all about taste. I can tolerate whole eggs but the taste is just not as good as the egg white. I make up for the slight loss in protein by eating a little more egg white - overall I get good results that I like whether making western omelettes or just serving eggs with sausages. Because I travel I keep my taste buds in tune with the occasional whole egg since many kitchens just do not offer egg white options (looking at me askance like something's wrong with me). This just does not seem to be such a raging issue!0

Agreed.
I eat 6 egg WHITES with breakfast every day of the week. If I included the yolks it would really throw off my daily Fat percentages. That many yolk would also add a whole lot of unnecessary Cholesterol. Plus I am not a huge fan of the taste of yolks, I've always preferred egg whites.
If you are eating an egg or two a day I am sure it is fine. Just depends how one has designed their diet.0 -

I love runny egg yolks, but HATE HATE HATE boiled yolks. So if Im eating hard boiled eggs I toss the yolk. Any other way though, and I eat them0

My understanding is that the whites contain most of the protein, and the yolk contains most of the calories. I did a little research before posting that seems to back that up. Other nutrients seem to be a wash - some are more in the yolk, some in the whites.
I eat a couple of eggs just about every day, yolks and all. As so many others point out, the calories are so reasonable that if you are eating anything resembling a healthy diet, a few eggs a day can't be anything but a good thing.0 -

I'd feel guilty tossing that many egg yolks. For nine egg whites' worth of protein I think I'd rather just grab a scoop of whey.0 -
Some people do not like the egg yolk from a texture/taste POV. Others don't like the egg whites for the same reason. Personally I love eggs. Totally tasty!0

If the yolks work in your diet plan, eat them. For some of us who eat 6 to 12 eggs a day it just doesn't work. We are after the protein For me it would be +500 cals, + 45g of fat and +1300mg Cholesterol ( a little high for my liking even though I am not really tracking my Cholesterol) a day. No thanks0

I may start keeping a carton of egg whites in the fridge. I love whole eggs and prefer them, but sometimes I need to bulk up the meal but don't have the calories or macros to do so. I also don't want to waste the yolks from separating eggs myself.
But I will NEVER do just egg whites. That's just silly!0 -
