Importance of weighing your food

I know some people disagree with the need to weigh their food, and hey, if they're succeeding without doing so, full power to them, fantastic! However, I just wanted to give a little example of how weighing your food can help.

So, got a packet of Cadbury Creme Eggs (I love Easter). The nutritional information on the packet says 1 serving = 25 grams, which is 115 calories. Logic would tell you that 1 egg would be 1 serving... right? Erm, no.

Got my trusty scales out, and weighed the eggs. Average weight of 41 grams! 189 calories.

YMMV, but make sure you know exactly what size servings you are having otherwise you may be seriously under-logging your calories.

Omg!! And there's no way to "share " then either..it's not like they're easily breakable!

That sucks. I don't even really like those, but knowing that other candies I do like are probably also not being totally honest with me bums me out. Also, what does YMMV mean? I can't figure it out!

That's shocking! I always assume a serving is one product.
I will be buying scales tomorrow!

good example for people out there..I don't weigh or log my food anymore as its pretty effin annoying to do so and I've been fine without but for those of you who do..good example here on how useful they are.

 I was amusing myself with the thought of people nibbling away at only 60% of an egg.

The Cadbury Crème Egg 4 pack of 4-1.2 oz. eggs (UPC 0 34000 01145 2) sold in the US are listed as 34g per 1 piece serving for 150 Calories, which is what each egg weighs. The package lists Mfd. in Canada for The Hershey Company Under License from Cadbury UK Ltd.
Are you purchasing yours in a different country?

I get frustrated when people don't weigh, at least when they are starting out! I had one person tell me they didn't need to and then a few days later they posted that their weight loss stalled. Hmmmmm

Yep - in New Zealand. Not everyone here is from the U.S.

Doesn't negate the point though, you cannot be 100% certain that you are eating the recommended serving without weighing (or measuring for liquids).

OP, were these the little eggs that come loose in a bag or the 4 pack of regular sized? I've found the 4 pack of regular sized to be very close to the stated weight.

Hi Jennifer - it was an easter pack.... no idea if they would have made them slightly bigger or not - just pleased I did weigh them so I would know exactly how much I'm having.

Me neither! Fortunately, I did not eat any this year. They changed the formula so I convinced myself that they must be terrible and I don't want them.

I weigh about 90% of what I eat and have noticed that virtually everything weighs more than what the label says it should.

    My thoughts exactly.

    Because packages and water weight.

i don't disagree with weighing, i just haven't needed to. i use measuring cups (careful not to e.g. fill the whole cup to the line. usually lol) and math (figuring things out from the package or weight of product originally given if it's meat). the fact that the scales i've used have all gone wonky is why, but i know most people's scales are fine. either way, it's less than I was eating before.

I'll still just live in denial and eat my Cadbury Cream Egg for what it says the calories are. Especially since they're only available temporarily.

I do try to weigh most stuff, but never thought to actually weigh a candy bar.

I ate a Cadbury Creme Egg last night and didn't weigh it... Oops, I weigh almost all of my food too.

Hmm, I lost 66lbs not weighing most things, after my 2nd baby. I'm losing after my 3rd baby now and I am weighing everything. Guess what? I'm losing at exactly the same rate as I did when I didn't weigh everything!

A lot of people have success not weighing but they often have much smaller goals, in my experience. Like, someone my size and age will have a goal of 1400 to maintain, when I would maintain at 1700 (not counting exercise).
I weigh about 90% of what I eat and have noticed that virtually everything weighs more than what the label says it should.

Yeah, about 90% of the things I buy are heavier. Sometimes it's actually mind boggling.

Yeah, I discovered that when I started weighing my pitted dates. On the package 2 dates equals a serving 40 grams, but when I weighed them 3 dates equal 40 grams. On another package 5 dates equals 40 grams, but when I weighed them, 4 dates equals 40 grams (approximately) or 120 calories. Also on my package of oranges, really confused because one orange was supposed to be 154 grams, but orange with peel weighed 180 grams and without peel was 118 grams. I reduced my calories recently by 250, ( now at 1780 calories per day) so trying to be really strict with my weighing.
