Fats are great for diabetics : All nuts , seeds , oils , cheeses , avo , fatty cuts of meat

Obviously she would avoid things that would spike insulin (certain carbohydrate) , so tell her to load up on the fats and eat protein at 1g per pound of her lean body mass .

Why does she want to gain weight? Maybe you mean muscle mass? If she wants a chance at ever being diabetic free, eating carbs without high glucose spikes, she needs to incorporate a few fasting days in her diet plan.

While it's very admirable you're wanting to help out your MIL. Diabetes is a very individual condition and her goals should be treated as such through a CDE, RD or her diabetes healthcare provider to effect safe blood glucose management practices.

I am a diabetic but it is T1 and I keep it controlled fairly well. I just do what any other "bodybuilder" does when trying to bulk. Just eat "clean" and get enough protein. As long as I am getting enough calories and working out hard I am good.

There might be some differences if she has T2 and needs to watch her diet to control it.

I'm type 2. Lost 35 lbs before I was finally diagnosed. Trying to add some lean muscle. Any suggestions other than lots of protein? Thanks

People who have diabetes can and should eat carbs, it should be just done in the individual way for each of them... ;-) Type 2 diabetes is caused by lifestyle, not like type 1 through an autoimmune disease, so it is even better to handle, or better said, it is not such a big deal.. ;)

There really isn't enough information to answer this. Which type of diabetes does she have? If she has type 2, how is she treating it? If she has type 2, why does she want to gain weight?

I agree with the suggestion to see a CDE and endocrinologist for such questions.
