Trying this, having trouble even getting motivated

I am very overweight and have not had any long term success with weight loss but I am trying again. I get so depressed when I deal with this like I have to do this because I am bad and therefore it is a punishment and I don't get to have the good things I like, just "sticks and twigs". I am also older and am not sure that this would help my knees hurt less often or my left hip and back. It also limits some of what I can do for exercise...I am currently walking half an hour daily but I just started back. I work as a nurse and I know what to do to eat well but there's like this wall of shame and failure.

  • Sorchya,
I am there with you. I have 51lbs to loose. Recently found out I had a Lacunar strike which are silent and it has scared the behegees out of me! There is no shame or failure in what you are dealing with. Life tends to happen, I have worked around nurses and the daily stresses they deal with drives them to snack. I have seen them have to make an extra effort to stay healthy. We can cheer each other on and share our success. ONWARD!!!!

Easier said than done I know, but try and look at losing weight, not as punishment but as something you're doing for yourself because you deserve to be fit and healthy. You're a nurse, so someone who is kind with a desire to look after others. Now it's time to be kind to and look after yourself.

Starting is often the hardest part but sometimes you just have to suck it up and do it. If you can keep at it for a month or so, you'll find it starts to get much easier. It's important to not try and change everything all at one. Make small easy changes to begin with and work up to changing the big things down the track. Diet should be your main focus for weight loss but exercise is important for fitness and health so don't ignore that completely. Swimming is a good low impact option

Need a "check up from the neck up!". The body just reacts to stimuli and over eating will cause storage and calorie deficit will use stored energy. You DON'T have to cut out foods you like, BUT you do have to account for the calories you've consumed and be consistent with calorie deficit to get results.
My one big thing to tell you is to get some post it notes a tape this statement to your bathroom mirror, your fridge and your car visor and say it out loud to yourself everyday.

    "I like myself unconditionally!"

Sounds corny, but I've been doing it everyday for over 30 years now. Does it help? I think so.

I read your profile and in your profile you do not sound very optimistic about loosing weight or making any real goals to do this..

Your motivation or desire is quite lacking in your words. I will say this, when you have your mind made up to loose weight and for what ever reasons they may be, the rest will follow suit. If your mind is not made up to be steadfast, it surely will result in failure just like the other times.

This is a journey and you have to have a positive out look. And remember you can't sprint through this.. But you must map out your journey first. If you do have a goal, a desire to reach that goal... well you get the point and I will end it there...

Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

Edited to add: I am 46 and I have been eating well and exercising since Oct 2014 and feel fantastic. You may be older (as you said) but you can teach an old do new tricks... I am proof of that..

Once you loose some weight a lot of your pain will go away. My chronic back pain is 100 times better than it ever was. And I hope that your husband and child are on board when you setup a goal. This will help you immensely achieve success.
