I would not count calories for sitting. Most of those calories are included in your BMR already (unless you picked that you are bed-ridden, if that's an option).

No I wouldn't trust it.. this is why

When I have say exercised on the tread mill for 1 hour and burned 600 calories (10 calories a minute)

and then I add in weight lifting for 1 hr it will say that I burned 10 calories a minute weight lifting, because that is the calories per minute I entered last time. And I KNOW for a fact that I am not burning the same amount of calories weight lifting as I am doing my cardio.

So I wouldn't trust it. JMO tho

Why would you count sitting as an exercise? Or to enter as calories burned, I am pretty sure it is all built in on mfp.

You burn calories just by breathing, but I wouldn't count that either.
If you sit for the same amount of time daily, them your body is used to the activity. Only log things above/beyond that.

I wouldn't count those calories, either. I only count calories for exercise. (For example, if you had small weights and did arm exercises while sitting, I would count that.)

Daily activity calories are already calculated into your goals. You will be doing yourself, and your weight loss, a disservice if you add those cals in.

If you can't walk, go swimming. You can't get much more low impact than treading water.

Not to be nit-picky, but have you ever heard of punctuation? Periods, commas, question marks, etc... It makes it easier to read and understand your posts.

why can't you walk yet? Are you getting prothesis in a few days? If you have legs, you can walk. If one is broken, get up on your crutches and move around. Don't make excuses for yourself. Sitting all day is unacceptable.

First of all, i can't walk due to major ankle surgery and the doctor have me on bed rest. This is my third left ankle surgery and for some reason i am healing slowly. I don't make excuses and don't need to, because i am doing this for me. I was just concern about how mfp calculate calories burned when they consider different exercises. But to those that help me understand better thank you for your support.

Okay, thank you for clarifying. There are still exercises you can do on bed rest. You just have to be creative. You can lift your body weight in the chair you're using (just grip the sides, and push, so your bum and legs no longer touch the seat). You can do modified plank on knees, as well as pushup on knees (neither will put stress on your ankle). Just have to be creative. Both are pretty low impact. I'd do them on bed rest, personally.

She didn't say why though! Some people come on here and think they are too heavy to walk. I just wanted to give some proper encouragement. Even on bed rest, there's no reason you can't get up and move a little. Laying around all day is not okay, and will prolong the healing process instead of helping. A healthy body is one that will repair itself quicker. Healthy habits = healthy body

I don't think she meant to be mean when she said what she did. Unfortunately when talking over the internet we can take things the wrong way when we can't see the face or hear the tone of voice.

And very, very obese people that can't walk...but want to lose weight...they start with arm exercises - grab some hand weights. it's still movement and even light movement will burn more calories than just sitting. You could probably even get on the floor and do some abwork - make sure someone is there to help you down and back up, though. You can do it!

Thank you, snickers! This is exactly what I'm getting at. There is ALWAYS something you can do to stay active.

When someone states that they are logging in "walking on crutches", I believe it would be safe to assume that they are in some way, shape or form, impaired.
To ask someone if they are getting a prosthesis tomorrow is beyond insensitive. The answer just might have been, "yes".

And I would have congratulated them thoroughly. That's a pretty exciting event!
However, you can find ways to stay active in any condition!

You can do arm based cardio while sitting. Things like punches, arm crosses etc. They're a great way to get your heart rate up and get in some cardio exercise while you recover from your surgery.

I wish you a speedy recovery and the best of luck with your weight loss journey.

    :) xx

@Torregro thanks so much for the encouragement, I don't think some understand that when on strict doctor orders, i can't do the things they stated. There is no way, i am not allowed to get on the floor nor on my knees right now. However the post that said do punches, and cross arm exercise was cardio, which i didn't know would count, is a good ideal for me to do. My main concern was finding a way to get some kind of cardio in. I have to be careful because the surgeon had to break my ankle and reposition my foot, then he had to cut the front of my ankle and remove a screw also. He then had to cut my ankle( from my foot to my upper ankle) for sural nerve release, and clean bad tissues. Then he had to cut the back of my heel and place two screws. He want me to do little movement due to the fact my ankle is healing slow. I now have to use a bone graft stimulator. So there it is, i didn't want to have to get into all what i am going through to ask a simple question. Even when i am healed, i don't plan to eat exercise calories. When i worked out daily i never ate more calories than i needed. I was doing 1.5-2.0 hrs of cardio on machines and 3 days of strength training, but i never had to work-out in a bed.

I burned 400 calories just 'sitting' here reading all these comments ...

Sorry to hear about your circumstances but when you set your goals on MFP it incorporates sitting (Sedentary) into your normal daily activity and it has other settings for people that stand on their feet all day at work, etc and these settings account for our 'activity' or daily routine. So just use 'exercise' for your arm lifts and crosses or anything else beyond your daily routine so you can get more accurate results.

It is good to know that you are trying to still be active in your condition and, you're right, you should've have had to explain it in detail to get an answer.

I don't know what access to services you have currently, but if you have an OT or a PT that comes to the house for therapy, there is an arm bike that is small and portable that they could bring to help you work your upper body. If that's not available to you, they are sold in a lot of sporting goods stores and online for around $50.00 or so....like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Drive-Restorator-Bike-Arms-Legs/dp/B000GT2JVI

A lot of rehab centers use them for strengthening and doing cardio work. You can work up a good sweat and never leave bed.
    Good luck to you.
  • Going back to the very beginning, it is possible to alter the cals burn on the exercises. It is also possible to add 'exercise' if you can't find what you are looking for.

So going to the 'Sitting' exercise - I would say someone obviously felt that it counted as exercised and added it, the cals burned would have been based on what that person burned though. As do some people when doing general housework think Ironing is an exercise.

If I want to count my cals when either doing cardio workout, mowing, gardening etc I always wear a heart monitor and then I can accurately record cals burned and time. I have myself added 'exercise' as I do mobile beauty therapist in addition to my sendentry work in an office and found out that wearing a HRM that I burn of a lot more cals as moving about, lifting & carry couch etc. However, the amount of cals burned do vary dramatically which is why I only add it if I've worn a HRM and its at least twice what I would have burned had I been sitting etc.

On another note, I hope you start to recover quickly from surgery and can start moving about easier.

Thanks for all of the support, i will go online and check on it. I would've never thought i would be facing something like this, however all my heart desire is to get some cardio in. Because i feel sluggish from being inactive. I am so use to working out in the gym, and my body is suffering, and becoming weak. I go back to my surgeon on the 31th of this month.
