Lost

Hi everyone. I'm 250lbs and started working out about 6 times a week on the treadmill on an incline and eating about 1600 calories total. I don't eat my exercise calories back. I've been doing this for 3 weeks and only lost 1 pound but I've lost inches. I really want to loose more weight. Does this mean don't walk on incline because I'm gaining muscle instead of loosing weight?

Are you weighing and measuring your food? Eyeballing doesn't work.
As for muscles, you can't gain muscle without a progressive strength training program, and even then it's really hard to do.0 -
Walking on an incline will not cause you to gain muscle, especially if you are eating at a deficit.
Is this a new routine? Your muscle may be holding on to water. This is very common with new workout routines.
If you're losing inches, it sounds like things are going well.0 -
A few tips:
Muscle is always a good thing. Don't worry about putting on muscle, it's great to be strong and it will help you get a shape that you want. It also protects you from injury. Would you rather have the shape you want or a particular number on the scale?
1600 is pretty low given your current weight and activity level. I think you can lose steadily eating 1800-2300 kcals per day. Generally speaking, it's a good idea to eat more if you can because you get more nutrition and it is more sustainable.
Make sure you are logging accurately. Use a food scale. There are some announcement threads at the top of this forum that can help you learn how to do so.0 -

Especially while in a deficit.
Make sure you are weighing and measuring everything you eat, and also don't pay much attention to the scale as measurements are a much better guide to your progress. Being a female, my weight can fluctuate anywhere between 5-8 lbs in any given month due to hormones, water retention etc. Good luck to you.0 -
Ok, I realize I didn't help you very much, sorry.
So, here's my advice.
1. Tighten up your logging. Weigh and Measure.
2. Maybe change up your exercise by adding some resistance training.
Read the sticky threads up top for all the info you need on how to log and how to get into "sexypants."0 -
Thank you everyone. I don't weigh my food but I think it is I'm not eating enough. I'm always Starving!! Maybe I'll loose more if I eat a little more.. thanks
I do love the idea of loosing inches, but also want to loose weight since I have so much to loose0 -

Until you start to eat carbs again. Then it will come right back. And there are no toxins in your body that needs cleansed. So much NO.
Buy a food scale. Track everything you eat. Get a true idea of how many calories you are really consuming and adjust from there.0 -

If you aren't weighing your food, you can't really be sure how much you are eating. Your sense of hunger isn't always the best guide -- your hunger can vary depending upon what you're eating, not just how much of it.
If you truly aren't losing weight (aside from water retention), adding more calories isn't going to speed up your weight loss.
Getting a handle on how many calories you're actually eating would be a great first step.0 -

Nope.
Low carb is fine but it's not magical. It's all about the calorie deficit.
NFMendoza, I'm glad you are going to eat a bit more, you should expect to feel hungry some of the time, but definitely not starving. I usually feel I am doing well if I'm getting hungry about an hour before meals and in the evening after my last meal. I really do encourage you to start weighing your foods though. A food scale is about $20 and it will make all the difference.

NO!
OP do not listen to this advice.
Your body "cleanses" itself just fine on it's own. A cleanse is going to do nothing for you except make your wallet thinner. Also, your body needs carbs to fuel itself especially if you are working out. No need to go low carbs.
Again... Do not listen to this advice!

If your not weighing food per food scale how do you know how many calories your eating? Buy a scale! Be honest w yourself. Also if your holding onto the treadmills all your not really burning as many calories as you think.0

Oh here we go again with toxins.
Enough already. No such thing as toxins or cleanses. Just eat food at a deficit. Get a food scale and weigh everything, every day.
Do that over and over again and you'll lose weight.

Eating too little wouldn't make you lose weight more slowly. The less you eat, the more weight you lose. So it's not that you're eating too little. 1600 is probably a good goal, just make sure you're actually eating 1600.

Do scales really make a whole lot of difference? I've always just measured my food and never had a problem with losing weight. Not a sarcastic question, I have a scale and would be down to use it if it's really that much more accurate.0

Respectfully, 1600 is fine when you are smaller, but starting at 250 and exercising 360 minutes/week, it is pretty low. Without weighing of course, who knows what the actual intake is, but the starving feeling is a sign it is low.

It varies depending on the person. My "tablespoon" of peanut butter was actually two tablespoons, but my serving of ice cream was about 20% less than I thought.

It could be too low. It could also be that OP is eating foods that don't give her a sense of satiety.0 -
Thanks..sounds like I do need to buy a food scale asap0

Either way, eating more won't cause you to lose weight more quickly.0 -

Not saying that, but it can be more sustainable. I don't think we actually have evidence she is having trouble losing weight because she just started a pretty aggressive workout and it's only been 3 weeks.

If you're losing fine without it, IMO, there's no need... yet. Eventually, when you get closer to your goal, you can break out the food scale! That way, it'll be something you can do as soon as your weight loss slos down.
I must say though, I started using one and it was quite an eye opener. I was (very unintentionally, mind you) overestimating calorie dense food, such as peanut butter and cheese... and actually underestimating precious fruits and vegetables.0 -

I would lose 1lb a week on 1600 and I am 150lbs...
Protein helps keep you feeling fuller longer, fat keeps you feeling less hunger as does fiber.
And don't confuse hunger with appetite.

Best thing you can do is to track your food carefully by weighing and measuring.
girlviernes has a point - if you start your weight loss at a really low calorie goal you eventually will need to lower it to lose when you get closer to your weight goal because as we get smaller we need fewer calories. So be realistic with what you need for calories now at your current weight and work down from there.
If you haven't, you should figure out your TDEE and take a percentage off of that number to use as your calorie goal. This is a decent calculator: http://iifym.com/tdee-calculator/
It is very tempting to want to see results fast but going slow and steady is best for a sustainable healthy lifestyle.
Good Luck!
Lexicpt - as you get closer to your goal weight and it gets harder to lose the weight, switching to weighing will definitely help.0 -
Everyone is telling your to weigh your food, which IS effective. However I wanted to give an alternative; teach yourself to calculate how much food you're eating by volume. For instance, 3oz of chicken is approximately the size of a deck of cards. This is technically just a more-accurate way to eyeball your food and weighing it is still the more effective option, but figuring by volume is more convenient IMO.0
