I am 5 feet 2 inches and 117 pounds. I need to drop a couple of bounds and get rid of my muffin top and excess fat on thighs so that my muscles show. I have been training for over a year now.
My trainer suggested either of the two fat burners. Which one is better and what are the possible side effects? Also how much should I take and for how many days?

Also, fire your trainer.
Yep.
Also, you can't spot reduce. The only way to lose fat is to eat at a deficit. The weight will come off where it's genetically prone to come off first.
If I were you, I'd fire my trainer and start lifting heavy.0 -
I do lift heavy and yes, you can't spot reduce. But I have read and heard people at my gym talk about fat burners taken along with protein shakes. I take a basic isopure soy protein. So there is absolutely no use of fat burners?

None. They line the pockets of the companies that make them, and the trainers that sell them, but have no real effect on fat. Only a calorie deficit can help with that.
Most of the "fat-burning" supplements are chock full of caffeine, so they may give you a bit more energy and have a slight metabolic effect during a workout, but that's about it. Caffeine can be acquired much more cheaply than a supplement.0 -

What fat burners actually do is make your body's temperature higher so you're basically running a fever the entire time. Since your body is maintaining a higher temp, you burn more calories. The downside to this is that it might make you feel absolutely awful - heart palpitations, jitters, slight "high" sensation. The risk of a heart attack is increased. Also, the most common "fat burner" is ephedrine (ever heard of an ECA or EC stack?) which is not available without a prescription in the US.
Personally, I've had ephedrine + caffeine (I'm from Canada where ephedrine is available at pharmacies) and it makes me feel awful and like I haven't slept in a few days and had too much caffeine. I don't really think it would be a sustainable strategy for any appreciable amount of time, especially when the increase in your daily calorie burn is, like, a banana's-worth. Just don't eat the banana.
Yes, bodybuilders do it a lot but it's their job to be shredded for competitions. If you're not a professional, I would not recommend.0 -
I looked further into the specific supplements that you're talking about and these are not ephedrine-based, my bad. The info still stands on "fat burners" but it is a different category. I've googled Conjugated Linoleic Acid which is what CLA stands for and I'm actually unsure what it does, if anything. The jury is still out on that one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conjugated_linoleic_acid
My guess is that your trainer is unsure what to do at this point and is grabbing at straws. Please do your research and know that you can also just not take anything you're not sure about. A calorie deficit always works. Be honest about what you're eating and how much.0 -
You'd be better off spending the money on quality, organic fruits and veggies than wasting your money on fat burners.0

Hi, I researched this product also. I'm also 5'2 and 117. I read on a bodybuilding.com that its basically and appetite suppressant + caffeine. On same site, some were for CLA, others saying a waste of money. Research HIIT cardio. Its supposed to be best for belly fat.0

Actually, I find the ECA stack works well for me. I don't know if it helps me burn more calories just by sitting around, but it DOES give me the energy to workout longer and harder, so I burn more calories that way. It also suppresses appetite. You are supposed to take breaks from it a couple days every week, and not take it for more than 8 weeks at a time, but so far, I have not noticed any bothersome side effects. I would only take it in the morning so it doesn't interfere with sleep.0
