45, need to lose a lot of weight. Been trying off & on for the last two years. Weight swings. Does anyone else experience huge weight gain before your cycle? I can wake up 10 pounds heavier a few days before "grandma" comes! Girlfriend & I set a goal to be active everyday until Memorial Day, join us!

Huh? What does your grandmother have to do with weightloss?

Do your weight swings have anything to do with other than your cycle? Are you counting your calories?

congrats on coming here... Emu's don't have grandmas... sad I know... BUT I say... thank the lord... fisrt things first... we're looking at a lifestyle change here NOT just weight loss.. because the surest way to end up on the yo-yo. is to think that altering your diet for a short period of time... is going to make a long term difference... NOPE... the only way to make a long term change is to take a long term view of your efforts and your goals... immediate weight loss can be expected... several pounds in a month is not uncommon... BUT then.. comes the work... and the frustration... be ready for that... it will pass as you substitute new healthy habits for old unhealthy ones... like too much sugar, too much salt... and just plain old too much of the bad things and not enough of the good things... Focus on balancing your diet first... start hitting your macros over the course of 3 regular meals each day and a couple of snacks in between... then start looking at portion control... until you are hitting your macros and your calorie goals... walking is great... always take water with you... and GET plenty of water... the mind can play tricks on you and make you think thirst is hunger... so IF you think you are hungry... drink 16 ounces of water first... then wait 15-20 minutes... and when you eat...chew your food longer than you have ever in your life... mash it up real good...it can take the brain a while to realize your reaching the full marker... so the longer you chew your food the chances are you will top up before you empty your plate... there are a few tips for you to get under way... and do plenty of reading and ask plenty of questions.. lots of people here to help... YOU do not need to re-invent the wheel... just pick one out and roll with it :)

You call your period your grandma? I just can't get beyond that. Do you not like your poor grandmother?

You can take the pill nonstop and never get your period again. It's a thing!!!

LOL! Thanks for the replies. For the record, I LOVED my grandmothers, God rest their souls, it's just that before & during my cycle I feel older, slower, less motivated, etc. (as in the way SOME older people are portrayed). Good advice. It's been over a week of MFP, weighing & measuring. What an eye opener. A cup looks a lot different when you actually measure it! Working to change my lifestyle & being active every day. Mixing it up is key for me. For example, instead of treadmill on Saturday, I volunteered for a beach clean-up.

As an aside, I'm also changing my way of thinking about aging. I watched Super Soul Sunday with Oprah this week & her guest shared, "Getting older is inevitable, aging is optional." LOVE IT! Have a fabulous day, more healthy than yesterday!
