Hot yoga.. How many calories can you burn?

I'm trying to log my exercise and can't fine hot yoga calories burnt?

    It's under yoga. Depends on the type of class but I just log in the yoga on here and like being in a calorie deficit anyway.

    Lol, not even close. I just plugged my numbers in and in a 90 minute session it said I burned 1300 calories!!!!!

    If I did a 90 min session, I MIGHT burn about 500 calories at my weight.

    I should march over to that place (not far from where I live) and shake my carb-laden fist at them.

    One suspects the value has more to do with marketing than reality.

    Agree. There's no way I burn 900 calories in 90 minutes of anything. Unless I was sprinting or running stairs, but that's impossible for me for 90 minutes.

    Maybe you couldn't, but I can run 10 miles in 90 minutes (that time is probably considered to be average). That would probably be around 900 calories, give or take.

    However, 900 calories doing yoga? Not likely.

    The general consensus of the few studies done on hot yoga practitioners with the most accurate lab equipment (not just heart rate monitors) is that hot yoga only burns about 15% more calories than a typical, non-hot, yoga class. Unfortunately however, there are very few standardized, trustworthy studies. If you're working fairly hard in class, you're probably burning maybe 300 calories an hour, based on your gender and weight.

    The full study is behind subscription only pay walls but the results are that the burns claimed by yogis are greatly inflated.

    Not likely all that much. Maybe 200 calories in an hour class. Maybe...

    Just because it is hot and you are sweating doesn't mean you burn any more calories...

    Agree that normal classes don't burn much. There's one class I do a week where I burn more than that because she does a very fast flow class with tons of planks and arm balances and when you move to forward fold and back from forward fold to plank, you're having to do a half handstand to "float" to and back. It's more an athletic yoga class that's power yoga concept or Baptiste based. Maybe 400 calories doing that class.

    Ya I don't think it burns all the many calories. It's kinda like weight lifting a bit (depending on the type of class). I don't really log my exercise cals as I do TDEE but still like to enter my exercise on here (I just change the cal amount to 1 instead of what it says) and MFP says around 209 cals for a 75 min sessions. (I just use the 'yoga' entry)

    That's a vinyasa class. Those are great for burning calories and getting a cardiovascular workout. Hot yoga is not. The only real benefit of hot yoga (over vinyasa) is that the heat enhances flexibility, and that can be a danger as well as a boon.

    Cold yoga would actually burn more calories than hot yoga as your body has to work harder to keep your temperature up.

    Yoga is still greatly beneficial from a flexibility standpoint though. Fitness isn't just about calorie burn.
