I always try to find out where we're going before hand to see if I can check out the menu online.

I always try and avoid things in sauce and dressing, and anything fried.

And if people are doing the whole '2 course' or '3 course' thing then I will always choose starter and main; most likely less calories and more nutritionally better than a huge sundae :)

There will alawys be social occasions and reasons to celebrate- and if you take the oppurtunity to have a blow-out at them all- your weight is not going to head in the rigth direction. I think about it like this: So, I haven't seen my freind in ages and she wants to hit pizza hut- my body doesn't magically remove all the calories since it's a special occasion.

I had this situation recently. I ate a 3 slices of thin crust pizza and ate loads of undressed green salad. I also ate lighter the next day (mostly because I'm not used to eating bread and my stomach was bloated). My freind on the other hand takes every special occasion as an exception to her diet and wonders why she doesn't lose weight. (a 'drink' to her is 1 1/2 bottles of wine) It's only food and you don't need to go mad to socialise and enjoy yourself! Have a great time by the way.

Try and fit in some more exercise before hand/after? Earn your calories?!

OP you had another thread where you were struggling to get to 1200 cals each day, instead eating closer to 900 cals, and you made comments about your ideal body image and weight which had a lot of people concerned for you. Please don't cut your calories shorter in order to make room for this event. Social events with family are something to look forward to and enjoy, not stress and dread.

As others have said, there is nothing wrong with meat, you said in the other thread that you don't eat much protein. The meat at those places are generally roasted or grilled and probably fairly lean. Eat the meat, enjoy the night, and don't be afraid to have cake too.

    Good luck and have fun!

I look at the menu ahead of time and try to figure out what I want and how it will fit. If I was going to where you were going I would probably eat all of the meat, and have a nice workout the next day where I sweat meat. It would be worth it. Enjoy the time with your family!

What I would suggest is that you take something when your favorite meat comes around the first time and then don't take any of the other meats or even when they bring your meat of choice back. But I can't say I've been successful with that approach. Personally, I hate that style of dining. The first time I went to a place like that, they brought the meat and I kept looking for them to bring the vegetables. They never came.

Thank you! Yeah, I'll think of those meals as of useful protein. I can't wait to finally eat as much meat as I want! No boiled chicken breast :D

Eat lighter during the day, cut down 100 calories the rest of the week, and you'll be fine.

Just do the best you can. Plan for it ahead of time when you can by saving back some calories and/or working out more in the days leading up to the meal. Enjoy whateever you have on these occasions; don't make yourself miserable with a salad plate at a beautiful charcuterie. Log it to the best of your ability, erring on the side of overestimation. And then move on and be happy you had a great time!

For regular events, I'll tell you what I told my friend who has a weekly dinner at the in-laws' she didn't know how to log: put a regular quick-add approximation in your diary for that day every week (for her I suggested 700 calories at every Sunday lunch). Then just don't sweat it -- as long as your approximation was realistic, even if it's more food one week and less food at a meal two weeks later, it will eventually balance out. Watch your loss for a month or so and adjust your approximation as needed to get closer to reality.

Sometimes I will pack my own food or just bring a protein bar! But I have never done that at a restaurant, only if my family or friends want to go out for ice cream or something like that!

Eat what you want and enjoy time with your family celebration! :) everything in moderation! I still try to log as best as I can when I go out to eat, just still making healthy decisions!

If I know something is coming up, j will eat really clean prior to the event, so I can eat guilt free! Cheat days are good as long as you bust your butt for the rest of the week :)

    Have fun!

I eat out. I blow my calorie budget for the day. I enjoy it. I get "back on the wagon" the following day.

While in the restaurant I eat what I want, but I admit I do find myself being a little mindful of the calories in things (if printed) while making my choices.

Unless you're doing this kind of stuff routinely I personally wouldn't worry about it...it's one day...try to look at the bigger picture...one day is pretty irrelevant in the big picture.

What I do is accept the fact that sometimes you WILL be eating a little "worse" than usual. Then, I try and mitigate the "badness" of the meal by making at least some good choices. Like skipping french fries & haveing a side veggie instead. Choosing a main menu item thats not as bad as a greasy, fried item. Things like that.

The key for this to work is to be sure you are behaving most of the time & outside of the family and friend gatherings. Ive been able to do this and I NEVER worry about it because I follow my own advice of behaving MOST of the time. ;)

Whatever you do - do NOT feel bad or miss out on a good time due to dietary constraints. Life is way too short for that and you'll also end up angry about it. Not worth it :)

I eat meat every day. Mostly chicken. It's $1.99 a pound for chicken breast. I get big bags of frozen fish too. They're pretty cheap. Steaks I usually buy if they're marked down because it's the last day before they need to be sold. I'd say I used to spend WAY more on eating out and fast food than I do now on meat. YMMV.
Meat is much more expensive here and I can't afford it other than 1/2 breast in a day( So I really miss meat!
