Hello
Im struggling to lose weight and wanted to know if i could get some advice on how many calories i should be eating per day? And if the types of food also matter. I am a female, weigh 150lbs and 5.5. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Try calculating your BMR. You can Google BMR calculator and many will tell you what you need each day just to sustain your body resting all day, and what you need to cut out (calorie deficit) in order to lose weight.0

Plug your stats and daily activity level into MFP and it will calculate a starting # for you.
At 5'5, 150, you don't have a ton of weight to lose, so you should set your goal to be 1/2 lb (or at the very most 1 lb) per week.0 -
Depends on your activity level. Are you sedentary? Active? Also maybe start with a 50:30:20 carb:protein:fat ratio and plug that into MFP. It will show you your macro goals. Eat whatever food allows you to hit those goals daily! Foods that are raw, ex veggies/fruit are great food sources to increase in your diet.0

You say you're struggling - that implies that you are doing some sort of method already. What are you doing?0 -
How have you been trying to lose weight? Have you been weighing, measuring and tracking your foods each day or are you just starting? Are you doing any type of exercise? How old are you and how active in your daily life? What types of food are you eating now?
I do think it matters a whole lot what your calories are made up of, but others may disagree. I like to focus on eating whole real foods while saving processed foods for rare occasions. I also do better with a higher fat and a bit lower carb diet than a conventional dietitian might recommend. A BMR calculator will probably suggest you eat 1200-1500 calories a day to lose weight if you are fairly sedentary, but take that with a grain of salt since everyone is different.0 -
I'm 5'5" too, and started out close to 150. Actually, a couple of years ago I was up to 164 and lost 22 pounds. It took 8 months. It was hard. It took focus. But I really wanted it, so I kept going. I lost between .5 and 1 pound a week. Actually, for the first four weeks I lost NOTHiNG, then finally started to. I'm not experienced enough to know how many calories you should be eating. But WHAT you eat is key. You want to eat foods that make you feel full, that keep you feeling full for a few hours, and that you like. For me, that was TONS of fresh vegetables, mostly spinach salads with carefully measured dressing. I laid off all alcohol, severely restricted dairy and grain-based carbs, and enjoyed fruit and the occasional square of dark chocolate for snacks/dessert. A handul of nuts ince a day for snacks. "Good" fats like olive oil and avocados (not too much). NO fast food and almost no processed food. EXERCISE. Took days off for Christmas and Thanksgiving and ate whatever I wanted. Then right back to it. Good luck!0

Oh, and I think I was eating somewhere like 1400 calories a day. I'm currently back up 10 pounds and trying to lose it again...at 1200 calories now. This is HARD. I don't worry if I'm over 50 or even 100 calories a day occasionally. I can't live being constantly hungry, so if I am truly hungry (not just bored or craving) I eat something healthy even if I go over 1200 calories. I try to exercise a lot and I "eat back" a portion of thise calories.0

MFP is designed to give you a calorie goal based on your current weight and your desired rate of loss (and the reality that if you don't have a lot to lose 2 pounds per week isn't reasonable!). The easiest thing to do is simply plug in your information and let MFP tell you how many calories to eat each day based on your goal. A few weeks in, evaluate your progress and tweak your goal manually, if necessary.
Frankly, though, with so little to lose, I think you'd be better off focusing on body fat percentage rather than losing the "last 10 pounds."0 -

Technically (by BMR) you are only 1 lb overweight. But, that doesn't mean you shouldn't lose more than 1 lb if you want.
Set your MFP profile correctly for your activity level and say you want to lose 1 lb per week. Eat foods you enjoy and find filling to meet that goal. If you include exercise/activity beyond your MFP setting, then eat a little more. Follow the plan and be patient.0
