This is probably a good place to start: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/1296011/calorie-counting-101/p1
As far as exercise, start slow and gradually build up. Most of your weight loss will be through getting your eating on track.0 -

^ Great, really helpful post Hemlon.
OP, really there is no secret. Use this app the way it was designed. Put in your info and eat that many calories. You don't need to exercise at all as long as you stay within your allotted amount. You don't need to eat special foods or eliminate certain foods altogether as long as you stay in your numbers. You can ease yourself into exercise for health - start with walking maybe - and the more calories you burn exercising, the more you can eat. Take it slow, you can do it.0 -

I hope you're healing well from your hysterectomy - that is not a fun surgery and is a surprisingly rough recovery. My mom had it done a few years ago, and I was surprised at how hard it was on her.

Enter your information into MFP (height, weight, age, activity level, etc.), set it to lose 1lb/week to start, and go from there.
Buy a food scale, as accuracy is important in logging. Most importantly, be patient. Losing weight takes time.
You don't have to exercise, especially if you're still recovering; however, moving around as much as you can will raise your calories out and keep you healthier. As you feel like you can do more, find an activity that you enjoy for exercise. You don't have to pound away on a treadmill - you can hike, swim, walk, jog, play sports, dance, lift weights - just find something and keep at it. Adjust your calorie goals as needed.
Good luck!0 -

This is actually against the guidelines.1. No Attacks or Insults and No Reciprocation
a) Do not attack, mock, or otherwise insult others. You can respectfully disagree with the message or topic, but you cannot attack the messenger. This includes attacks against the user’s spelling or command of written English, or belittling a user for posting a duplicate topic.
b) If you are attacked by another user, and you reciprocate, you will also be subject to the same consequences. Defending yourself or a friend is not an excuse! Do not take matters into your own hands – instead, use the Report Post link to report an attack and we will be happy to handle the situation for you.0 -

No problem! You'll hear a lot of people talk about how "mean" we all are if you read through the forums. Though we may not always agree, and we may be blunt at times, we always try to give the best advice we can possibly give. I encourage you to ask questions and lurk around the forums if you can. I've learned so much from the awesome people here.0 -
