Rude? or not.

My daughter's church choir is going to another church to sing. The other church is 3.5 hours away. They are providing lunch for everyone. I would think it will be some kind of covered dish dinner or pizza since they are feeding teenagers.
We went to Subway yesterday and I have my half sandwich that I didn't eat. Would it be rude to take it with me and have that for lunch? WIth the sandwich I know exactly how many calories I'm consuming. With a covered dish it will be almost impossible to know. I'm sure it probably all be delicious but if I'm going to "cheat" I rather it be with stuff I really want at the moment.
I won't be able to get all my water in either since we will be traveling all day with a group. And there won't be many places to stop in the way so I have to be careful with my liquid intake. Eating unhealthy would be even worse without the water to flush it out.
My husband kind of frowned at this option so I'm asking.
My other option is that I have a hand-held scale (postal scale) and I can bring Zip bags and try to weigh things so I can at least figure the calories out a little better. This will look weirder and harder to do, I think, that just eating my sandwich.
Any other suggestions?
Melanie

I don't think it's rude at all... weird maybe but not rude. The problem is most people eat pretty unhealthy so you have no idea what they are putting in their foods (salted butter, oils, etc)
I say if that will make you comfortable, you do what is right for you. Let other people mind their own business.0 -
take the sandwich and some water. If they can't understand you desire to lose weight, oh well0
-
i agree.. take your sandwich! it's the best option.. good luck0
-
Not rude or strange. I bring my own food to everything. If someone ask me, then I just tell them I have a goal set and I am doing everything I can to get there...If they don't understand, then that is on their side not yours!
Take your sandwich!0 -
I have no idea if that would be considered rude. If you were allergic to certain foods, than I know it wouldn't be rude.
So all I can say is what I would do. I personally would not bring it. I would watch what I ate that day, and guess on the portions and calories. It is just one day. I am not saying pig out, but I wouldn't worry about getting the exact calorie count.
When I have to add something, say like lasagna, I look it up in the data base and use a figure that is in the middle, or better yet, a higher figure.0 -
Not rude at all, just sensible! :flowerforyou:0

My son and I both have food allergies, so we take food with us all the time. People rarely say anything. I say, bring what you need to for yourself, and if anyone says anything about it, just tell them that you have to be careful about what you eat. It's not rude on your part at all!!0
-
not rude at all you amongst your fellow church mates im sure judgement is not on their mind PLUS i do this all the time and i just say excuse me i brought mine if it all the same to you and move on0
-
i would hope that people at a CHURCH would understand0

I think taking out baggies and weighing their food would be rude. Bring the sandwich.0

I personally do not think bringing your own food would be rude. You have to do what is best for you. No one would even question your intentions if you had food allergies, why should they if you are being conscious about what you eat?
Hope this helps!0 -
If you want to bring your sandwich, bring it. If anyone gives you grief, tell them you have a dietary issue and prefer to bring your own. They don't need to know what that issue is. ^_~0

Yes, I have food allergies and also do this. I also have some digestive issues as well. Pot lucks are dangerous territory.0 -

I agree here, this is a church affair and they aren't supposed to judge anyone. Either way I would take it. Maybe you could send a message to others when they are eating junk and you are eating a healthy sandwich0 -
Absolutely not! Take ur sandwich and munch it w pride! More than likely you won't be the only one. Lots of dietary needs out there in the world0

Bringing the scale will make you look like a mental patient. Just take the sandwich.0

Our church just hosted a visiting choir. With all their kids and ours as well as the many parents and choir directors----no one would have noticed if anyone was eating something that was not being served. Besides, you'll be among people that are typically kind and tolerant. Take your sandwich and enjoy the adventure.0

If you are discreet about it, no one will even notice! Bring a large tote bag and put a lunch bag cooler inside it. Look over the potluck table and take a small portion of fruit salad or lettuce salad or something similar (those items are almost always taken to a potluck by others trying to eat healthy). Then take your plate back to your seat and slip the sandwich onto it. With all the different foods there, no one will notice. No explanation necessary!0

Have you seen Teenagers eat?? You should bring your own food just to ensure you will get some!!0

hahahahahaha As a middle school teacher, and mom of 6 kids ages 12-21 -- this is REALLY true!!0 -

This sounds like the perfect solution. You have a goal and you're taking it seriously. Plus, it's not like you're the Guest of Honor and everyone has been slaving away to please you. You're looking after yourself...kudos!0 -
if anyone asks, just tell them you have a food allergy if you want your real reasons to be kept private. it's more rude to ask than it is to lie about it.
and take water with you.0 -
I don't think that's rude at all. Bring your sandwich and enjoy!0

Thanks everyone! I hadn't even thought that will all the people around no one would probably notice. I can always not bring it out if they have healthy stuff that I can eat. I was just worried because they are been nice to feed us so I would hate to not be grateful.
I have another dinner like that at work in two weeks but with my coworkers I don't have issues, half of them are healthy eaters anyway and already said they will only eat the burger no bun and bring salad from home. All the sides are mayo-carb salads or maccaroni and cheese. The committee just couldn't come up with any ideas of healthy stuff that they could buy enough. (enough for everyone since it is our employee recognition luncheon). Go figure!
Thanks!

Ill be honest, if I had made dinner for a few close friends, and some of them said they were watching their weight, I would find that rude. Considering I have a few food allergies, and I can deal with them dishing out the food I am allergic to (not on my plate, but theirs in front of me), they can deal with having an extra 100 calories of good, healthy food.
But for a large group I wouldn't think its rude. It's not like your loudly telling everyone you don't like what was prepared.0 -
I believe that this is a great option and I think everyone would be jealous because they did not think of the same thing. No really it's not rude, you are trying to eat healthy and do whats best for you and your life and if someone cannot understand that then maybe they would not be the best support in the first place. Good luck and great job!!0

I dont see anything rude about it0
-
water to flush it out??? where do you people get these ideas0
-
I don't think it's rude at all - but I do know how you feel. I always worry about upsetting other people - even when it comes to food! Time to put ourselves first *at least a bit*!0

Hi there,
Bring your own sandwich and EXTRA water. Years ago when I was in college, centuries ago I worked in a restaurant and they had strict rules about eating during our shift. I was in great shape back then, ran 2-5 miles every day, lifted weights everyday. Some of my fellow employee friends were competetive in biking, running on and on. WE would all broing in our own food into a restaurant!
I was know for bringing in cans of pineapples and yogurt. Then as I do today, I have a cooler in the back of my car. I have a friend, a seriously beautiful woman, both inside and out. A great girl, I guarntee you at this moment she has a sandwich in her nap sack of a purse. I usually run in a big group of friends, it is nothing for her to whip out her sandwich of the day when ever she's hungry! She's about 5'6" and about 120 lbs. We don't think a thing about it, Kim's hungry! Ok, so. the girls prepared! She's great to take to concerts, trust me. Kim in theat bag you wouldn't happen to have.........she usually does with mixers!!
Take your sandwich, and there is not reason why you can't bring your own water.0
