Weight loss is weird

I lost 6 lbs from the 8th to the 19th and then this week 1 lb. I am in no way complaining I'm extremely happy with the loss just wondering why it's always so extreme. My weight doesn't really fluctuate as far as going up since I started. It will stay the same for a week or two and then all of a sudden I'm down 2 or 3 lbs in a week. Anyone else like this?

Weight fluctuates up and down. Don't fool yourself.0 -

Hmm I'm wondering if maybe my scale doesn't register until it's a more significant difference. To me it seems like you would go down a few ounces at a time not just drop 3lbs never to return. Like where does it go overnight?0 -

I weigh daily and I'm never higher than the day before. I might go from 169.8 to 170 but never a full pound. It is possible my scale is off but it lines up with my doctors so idk....0 -

It happens all the time. Fluctuations are natural! I weigh every day and despite eating pretty much the same things and exercising exactly the same mine can fly around!0

If you didn't weigh daily you wouldn't be confused about things like that.
It's normal not to lose weight consistently. You're normal.
Or...as an alternative...
Weigh yourself daily to get the data, but don't analyze the data except over weekly/monthly trends.
Your weight is not some sort of constant number...it is constantly going up and down every day and every hour based upon a whole variety of factors.
Trying to analyze the difference in weight from one day to the next is an exercise in futility. Day to day fluctuations mean NOTHING...repeat NOTHING.
The long term trends is what will reveal whether your plan is helping you meet your goals.0 -

No, scales don't work that way.ncboiler89 wrote: »I lost 6 lbs from the 8th to the 19th and then this week 1 lb. Not really worried since I've lost 30 lbs in 85 days. Just thought it was interesting no need for condescending comments. Geez0 -
Weight does fluctuate with water retention as well. Usually within the first week of watching what you eat you can loose alot of water weight, then the fat starts to go and as we all know losing fat is harder and takes longer, therefore lower numbers on the sale after the first week or so.
Sometimes my weight will fluctuate depending what I ate the night before too. Too much salt = water retention, slightly higher in carbs = water rentention too (this one is harder to get rid of thought)
The time of the month is also a factor that can play in weight fluctuatin in addition to bowel movements.
hope this helps.
Just drink plenty of water to flush out the system, excercie and make smart choices0 -
I'll go 2 down hold for 3 days, 1 up hold for 3 days, down 2 hold for 3 days... I'm still trying to find what it correlates with LOL
I really like my weight app to look at the trend for the last few weeks. I don't focus on any one measurement, too much noise (waterweight, bowels, muscle recuperation...)0 -

Yeah, I guess I just find it fascinating. I know some of the weightless is due to water weight , sodium ect. I'm almost 3 months in and I just don't see a consistent pattern. I guess I can't really wrap my mind around where it goes lol.0 -
I weigh every day, this is totally normal. On Saturday I weighted 186.6. Today, 3 days later I weighed 191.9...no way did I gain 5 pounds of fat. It's just from being bad this weekend and PMS. I'll be back down to 187 in the next few days.
No biggie.0 -

One of my scales doesn't register a loss unless it is 2+ pounds. It's the stupidest thing. Whenever I weigh myself I have to start out holding something heavy in my hand so I'll stand on it holding a couple of giant things of body wash and mouthwash, let it register a weight, and then put everything down and get back on again. Only then will it give me the new weight.0 -

That is hilarious, I can just picture you doing that every weigh in.0 -

It's really annoying when the body wash and mouthwash bottles are close to empty so I end up grabbing every random thing that I can hold in my arms.
I found the reviews on Amazon. Clearly I didn't read them before buying the scale. (And we've tried changing the batteries but it doesn't help.)0 -

It seems odd because we tend to think of weight loss as fat loss. If you are consistently at a calorie deficit you are likely consistently losing fat as your body dips into those reserves for fuel. That's where the fat goes - it's converted to energy. But weight is not just fat and many things affect water weight.0 -

Lol! I've had 2 scales like that. I never thought to hold heavy stuff - I just 'weigh my leg' (put one leg on the scale) first to get it to register some weight different from my current weight, and then weigh my whole self! I alternate doing that 3-4 times until I get the same weight at least twice and that's the one I go with.

The following link is to a remarkable post that does a rather bang-up job of illustrating (via that OP's data-driven charts, and associated explanatory comments and clarification of 'context') the reality of weight fluctuation -AND- (via a second post from the OP, in that same thread) the degree to which misleading conclusions could have been drawn if/when he'd only weighed on days that happened to represent 'spikes' in weight...
http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10152741/i-hit-goal-today-after-27-months/p1
I consider that thread's posts by the OP to be among the most important on MFP...
Lastly, to gauge just how much *my* weight can fluctuate in a day -- let alone, from day to day -- I usually hop on my scale at least twice a day... and on days when I'm home most of the day, I'll occasionally do a kind of throughout-the-day bit of 'reality check', to see just how much my weight can change in a day...
...and what I've found is that on any given day, it's not at all unusual for my weight to fluctuate up and down, and within a range of up to 5 pounds in a day... I don't worry about it... and over time, that range ends up involving lower numbers on the scale (i.e. it still fluctuates, and within a range of up to 5 pounds in a day, but the numbers that represent the 'low' and the 'high' of the range, continue to decrease, over time -- and THAT is what I rely on, for me, to indicate weight loss)...
...seeing my weight fluctuate the way it does, I find it difficult to peg my weight to a single number -- I've come to see it more as being 'within the range of ___' -- and while some might suggest using a kind of 'midpoint' to represent whatever my 'weight' happens to be, the fact that I've seen it fluctuate so consistently (and it makes sense for weight to perpetually fluctuate, if we allow ourselves to consider the 'how(s)' and 'why(s)' of such) results in my finding it conceptually difficult to see my weight as involving one 'value', instead of a range (unless one makes it a point to see any such single value as being a kind of "at that moment in time" indication of the then-current 'state')...0
