found out why I'm not losing weight after having a baby...

This is a rant.. kind of.
I didn't think I ate much today... after logging what I ate, I realized that I ate almost 1000 extra calories than what I should have.
I usually eat more than what I ate today, now I know why I'm not losing any weight. Great.

Hah. Diet and exercise start tomorrow! I want to get back to the weight I was about two years ago. Pre pregnancy weight was 175, and I ended my pregnancy at 210, afterward plateaued at 185.
Two years ago I was about 145, I wanna be back there. Being 5'9", my weight doesn't look that terrible, but I notice it, and my butt is huge. Ugh

Accurate logging can be a real eye opener. Are you using a foodscale? The first step to solving any problem is to identify exactly what the problem is...so it sounds like you're on the right track.

This really opened my eyes, it's how I realized I've been struggling with getting back to my racing weight. After (my wife) having a baby I haven't had time to ride 15-18 hrs a week, most weeks I'm doing 8-12 hours tops and losing that extra 3-4k calories a week hurt quite a bit.

I know what you mean. A couple of days, I ate a lunch that I decided was negligible so "I could do that again!" But no, my negligible lunch was almost 400 calories. Yikes! I'm glad I logged it before I went back for seconds.,

Today I ate at Panera Bread. Silly me thought that "chipotle chicken panini" wouldn't be all that bad. So I ate it and it was really good!

Then I logged it and it was 840 calories :o I just watched an entire episode of Big Bang Theory on the stairclimber.

My wife wanted to go to whataburger on a road trip the other day... I spent the entire time from her decision to the time we got there googling the lowest calorie most filling thing on the menu. I got a cranberry chicken salad with no dressing or croutons. 450cal.

Dairy Queen is my fast food of choice now when my daughter wants to stop somewhere. They have a grilled chicken on garden greens salad that's 150 cal.

Yeah, their sandwiches are crazy high from the bread. If I want a Bacon Turkey Bravo, I get a pick 2 with a Caesar salad and only spend about 550 calories.

I don't go out and eat unless I have banked an extra 1000 calories. I don't want to eat a damn salad at a burger joint. Lol

I don't have a food scale, I'm tempted to get one... what harm could it do?

It's amazing, isn't it? You think of overeating as pigging out, but really, you can hit your cals and go over without even thinking about it.

Last night, I made spaghetti bolognaise. For me, I had a smaller serve with added veg and only one slice of garlic bread, it fit within my cals. Out of interest though, I weighed my husband's serve (which was what I'd have eaten before) and it was about 1200 cals just for the pasta, sauce and 2 slices of homemade garlic bread! Previously, I'd have never considered that a big or heavy meal. But when you consider that back in the day I'd have had a muffin for breakfast and a foccacia for lunch, along with a soft drink and some snacks (and consider that a normal day), no wonder I gained.

Mine used to be too until I found out they charge you extra for the side salad...now I will be going to McDonalds where it's a one to one trade French fries for Salad..get their grilled chicken burger and side salad...less calories than DQ as well...

And my son worked at DQ so I know that their Grilled chicken sits in grease with the rest of the burger from the deep fryer and grilled so eh...odds the difference.

*Definitely* get a food scale. You're just kidding yourself until you do.

I have that Ozeri scale and love it. Great price!

Once I started logging my food I realized why I got fat...I was picking and munching on all my kids food and snacks.
Added up huge!! Now I'm on a downward trend. I love tracking because it took the wonder out of my weight gain.

Definitely get a food scale! If you think logging was an eye opener, wait until you see what weighing food does for you.

I've found the most eye opening thing being weighing packaged food. NOTHING weighs what the package says. I've had slices of bread weigh 50% more than they should, 70 calorie eggs end up being 80 calories... you get the idea. Even things like my 60 gram protein bars. Some are 56 grams, some are 65.

    It starts to add up.

I have been there too! Now my husband does it with me. We log in everything we eat. If we go out to eat we look online for menus to see what we think looks good and low-cal if we find a menu we both like we go there. That way we stick to our goals.

I have a digital scale at home and my old spring scales at my mother's and fiance's. I love love love it.

Also, pre-logging helps you not go over.

I just got an Ozeri since it was pretty cheap to bring with us when we travel, my wifes family serves typical hispanic meals that include lots of white rice / refried beans / ground beef etc... It's pretty hard to figure out what the portions are by just looking.

Ha! That was my first day too!
    "I ate how much hummus?!?"

Don't worry, the restriction isn't so bad!

I had the same eye opener a couple of years ago! Id snack inbetween meals and never count because it was only a couple of bites or only one biscuit. It was all adding up!

Yeah it was an eye opener when I started both logging in my food and using my food scale. Crazy!

I ordered the scale! It should be here in about two days :) and my husband is lucky because he can eat anything and really hasn't gained more than ten pounds in the past five years.. But he said he'd support what I am doing here, even if it means no more pizza rolls for dinner!
    Poor guy, lol

Both of you on the same page will make an immense difference in how you handle your health. When my wife got pregnant and post-baby her diet was horrible and I gained about 7-8 lbs quickly and struggled to keep it at no more than that, it's hard to sit next to someone eating something tasty and calorie dense like pizza and not have any yourself.
