3500 = one pound gained - RANT !

So this morning, I go to weight myself and I have gained 3 pounds. So if 3500 = one pound above maintenance, then I ate over 10,500 calories in the week. I just don't get it. Given I had the flu last weekend, so no over eating and this week I have been really good ( ok, I did eat a couple home made cookies I made) but I weight train in the mornings, cardio at lunch and then do a nice long walk/run/hike after work. I am feeling extremely frustrated today =(

More likely to be normal fluctuations than eating 10,500 extra calories by accident.0

That equation only applies to fat gains. Chances are you're up with water weight, it happens to us all at some stage. Also, if your period is due you can 'gain' 5+ pounds in water weight. Good news is, it disappears.0

Water weight can fluctuate upwards of five pounds a day. Are you nearing TOM or did you consume excess sodium in the past couple days?0

OP: Smr is right, it's just water weight, did you eat something salty? I notice if I go out for dinner, eat something salty, or have alcohol, my weight fluctuates a lot. Once I controlled for all those things it just started falling off.0 -

your weight will fluctuate +/-5 pounds a day and weight loss is not linear.
Last Friday I weighed in at a 177.5 which showed a pound gain for me, which is not possible because I a have been cutting at about one pound per week. Today, I weighed in this morning and I am 176.3...so my "gain" was really just water weight...

Water weighs 10 lbs /gal

high sodium will cause you to retain water so is not just a matter of what you drink. Do the math0 -
I was up 7 pounds last night. Lost it all by this morning. Guess how many times I had to get up to pee last night lol.0

I don't think I have a lot of sodium, but maybe I do and have to tone that down a bit. I can be OK with gaining water weight.. I guess lol...0

Apple Cider Vinegar helps with getting rid of the excess sodium and water weight. don't overdo it though. 2 tbsp in large glass of warm water.0

normal fluctuation. Also, if you had the flu this week, you have become a little dehydrated. So your body holds onto water even more (this happened to me the last time I had a stomach bug). I once read that a gain of more than 1.5 lb is usually just water weight/fluctuation. I think that's a good rule of thumb unless you know you went crazy with food (which you didnt).0

you do realize that scale weight is comprised of more than just fat right?
good lord...have you even considered the fact that if you eat more you are going to have inherently more waste in your system...and that you are also gong to retain more fluids? Guess what...all that has mass and thus weight.

you don't have to have a ton of sodium to retain fluids...you retain and release fluids naturally regardless...also, more food is going to require more fluids to metabolize...more food is also going to top off glycogen, etc.0 -

I appreciate all the helpful hints, but GOOD LORD, do some of you have to be just so generally rude all the time. This is why I don't even bother asking anything on this site and just research.0

PMS/time of month, sodium intake, new exercise/changing current exercise routine, digesting food, drinking fluids before weighing, taking a shower before weighing etc etc can all affect the scale, but are not actual gains.0

I think people deep inside already know the answer to half their "issues, rants , problems" etc. But they just want other people to validate it and make them feel better. I am the same way by the way.
That's how you get threads with hundreds of replies almost identical to each other.lol
But yes, if many of us just did some research or just read threads already created here on mfp, we could sure save ourselves some energy not worrying about things out of our control.
I also don't think it was meant to be rude to say "pointless rant". It was more a "tough love" kind of reply.
Now, saying all this, this very thread is why I think the scale messes with people and causes people to give up. They work hard and eating healthy within their limits and the scale shows a gain. Water weight or not, it can be annoying as hell.0 -

This is also why we have a gazillion threads that are practically the same topic. "I gained 5 lbs in a day, why?" "RANT Why am I not losing weight?" The search function could answer a lot of these topics and they wouldn't have to worry about someone "being rude".

this is why I don't weigh all that often. the water retention is ridiculous. and avoid weighing in the day after weight training....always up 2-3 lbs. TOM -- up to 7 lbs for me.0
