What Do You Do When You're Super Discouraged

I've been having a terrible time lately, mostly because I can't find a job, but some other things too. I have applied for somewhere around 40 jobs over the past month or so and besides a few rejection emails, no one bothers to get back to me. Apparently it's the new evil to call HR and inquire about your application. That seems to be a direct road to a rejection. I'm well educated but even the field I've been working in for 19 years won't hire me. They don't want to pay for experience. I am so discouraged. I run, exercise, etc. but money is drying up and I'm worried. I have no family or anyone to rely on. What do you do when you don't know what to do???

    Here's what I'd advise:

Get a part-time job doing something in the periphery of your desired career to at least get some income and keep from having big employment gaps. (If you are a pastry chef, you can be a server for a caterer, or if you're a project manager for a tech firm, get an admin job for a tech firm).

Use the rest of the time networking, and working your network for work in your desired career.

    UNLESS

Your career is phasing out due to tech advances. In that case, look for a lateral move in a different industry for which your skill set would work.

Either way, you gotta hustle. Find a way to stand out in a positive way.

    Live frugally.

That can be risky. Some future employers may not take you seriously.

I like this idea, I just don't have much business sense. Can you recommend any good websites/tutorials on small business starting? I think I'd have something to offer.

Well I can't seem to get hired as a paramedic -- too much experience I guess. Around here, in order to teach EMT classes you have to be accredited, the way a college is. I do teach first aid and CPR but it's not a good money-maker because there is so much competition as the area is inundated with instructors. I'd have to really make myself stand out somehow (other instructors offer their classes for free). Thanks for the suggestions though!

See if you could be an adjunct facility at a school that teaches paramedics. One of the ladies in my business has absolutely no teacher accreditation and she teaches an elective in business at a local college. You have to be able to pass a background check.
