I'd suggest doing some research on goitergenic foods. My wife is low thyroid too, and she found cutting out goitergenic foods like peanuts and cabbage have been helping her in NSV type ways too, such as lot better hair and nails. Her nails would break all the time. Her body temp is more normal now too. As always, YMMV.

I also have hypothyroidism, and it is very difficult to lose weight. One option is to go back to running multiple marathons every year...but that is a LOT of time dedication. So...another option is to work in cycles of aerobic, anaerobic, and weight training. HIIT is not really going to help much if you don't have the aerobic capacity or the lean muscle mass to make the training beneficial. However HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training, like crosstraining of jump rope intervals) is the best fat burner for the time spent. Eat well, keep your calories reasonable, and start a weight training program along with some short steady state work (running 30-45 minutes or double that on a bike but keep it no higher than an estimated Heart Rate zone 3). If you want to learn how to weight train with intensity find any of the books by Mike Mentzer on the subject.

Glad you're getting tested again! Make sure you're working with a doctor who will correct you with medication until you feel well, not just until you test within normal range. That should make your weight loss easier.

Once you're on the proper dose of medication, weight loss will work for you the way it does for anyone else. Eat less calories than you burn. You might lose weight a little more slowly, you might not. Some people with hypothyroidism benefit from reducing their carbohydrate intake. Others find that it doesn't matter much. Find a way of eating that's sustainable for you.

I often see recommendations that people with thyroid issues need to exercise harder to lose, and I have not found that to be the case. I tend to think that those individuals are most likely not being treated optimally with medication.Find an exercise that you enjoy so that it increases your chances of sticking with your exercise program.

I have had hypothyroidism a long time. I'm on a very high dose of Synthroid and my thyroid is just about dead. I also have other medical conditions and I'm 52 years old. I lose weight just fine.

A lot of people say that it's harder to lose weight with this condition, but it's not. It might be slower, but it's not harder. Those individuals, again, most likely are not optimally corrected or have mitigating issues which have not yet been addressed.

If your TSH is one or less, than have your free T3 checked. Are you supplementing with selenium?
Synthroid is T4, only. T4 is metabolized to T3 in the liver. You may need a med with T3

It's okay, exercise isn't necessary for weight loss, but it does help the fatigue you can feel with hypothyroidism.

Can you walk? Ride a stationary bike? Exercise is for fitness, a calorie deficit is what makes the weight loss happen.

Try and see. If it's not for you, you could always add those things back. As long as you're eating an appropriate number of calories to create a deficit, you'll lose weight, especially once your medication gets sorted and your thyroid levels out.

I eat a moderate amount of carbs. Not super low, not as high as most, and I found that helps with my fatigue best. Find what works best for you.

I have hypothyroid as well I've lost 90 pounds so far. First, are you on medication? If not, go talk to your doctor! Secondly, you CAN lose weight, you just have to be extremely diligent about weighing, measuring and logging your food. Every single bit if it. It also may take playing around with your calories abut to find a deficit. It really is calories in vs. calories out, you just have to find that tipping point.

An under active thyroid makes you lose weight slower...that's all, so dont despair :) Of course first go to your doctor.

You have to weigh all your food on a food scale and log them accurately. Create a deficit and walla you WILL lose weight. Slower that's true but you will.

But you have to start weighing all your food on a scale and start logging.
Fill in here your stats and goal and start your journey.
You will find out that like so many other people here that you can do it and lose weight :)

    good luck!!

I have hypothyroidism, PCOS, 3 herniated discs, fibromyalgia, etc. It's hard, but I can certainly lose weight. You can't feel sorry for yourself. You just have to put the work in.
If your thyroid levels really are low, your doc will put you on meds. You may get a prescription for Synthroid, Levothyroxine, Armour, etc. I was on Synthroid for years and it was okay. Levothyroxine didn't do jack squat for me - my insurance just switched my prescription one time without telling me and I literally couldn't get out of bed. So I did Synthroid for a while and then switched to Armour and it worked better for me, though not perfectly. Coconut oil helps with thyroid function. Iodine (seaweed, iodized salt, dulce) helps with thyroid function. Selenium helps with thyroid function. You may want to consider supplementing with some of those things or incorporating them into your diet more. There were like 6 months when Armour was out of stock a few years back and I purchased Iodoral (from Amazon) and it helped to get me through those months with no thyroid meds.
