Calorie deficit~ weight loss
Calorie surplus~ weight gain
Protein powder is used to supplement protein. It has nothing to do with weight loss or weight gain.0 -

Unless using protein powder puts you in a caloric surplus you have no issues.0 -
Protein powder won't bulid your muscles. It will help you reach your protein macro goal. To build muscle you have to lift. And to lose weight eat in deficit.0

If you cannot get enough protein from nutrition, then supplements have their purpose. If you are getting enough protein, then you are just adding extra calories you don't need.0

Protein is also harder for your body to store as fat and takes longer and more effort to break down so it can help you feel full longer and not spike your insulin levels0

Some protein powders or drinks are "padded" with extra calories, and are used specifically for weight gain purposes. These are labelled pretty clearly, though. Your run-of-the-mill protein supplements won't affect weight loss, though. Even the "weight gainer" stuff won't cause you to gain weight if you're eating at a deficit- you'll just consume more calories in one go with them. I find protein supplements to be more helpful than anything, since they're filling.0

I've gone from 292 pounds to 201 pounds in 10 months and I include 2 protein shakes as part of my meals daily.0

But that would be because you were at a deficit as per what thorsmum said.0 -

Absolutely true. I've been on a 1500 calorie a day diet for the last year.

I have a protein smoothie with added pure coconut oil, amongst other add ins every single day for lunch, it never affected my weight loss. As everyone else said, as long as you stay in a deficit it doesn't really matter what you eat.0
