I'm a beginner too, but I'm determined to stick with it and take it slow and steady. My ultimate goal is to lose 50 lbs but in the mean time i had immediate goals that were attainable. I think having a long term goal plus more immediate goals is important.
For me, just logging my food everyday and making it a habit was my first priority. I haven't missed a day even though a few of the 38 days I've logged were splurge days. Don't let a little slip up discourage you. I've learned a lot, my habits and weaknesses.
Logging my food has helped me stay motivated to exercise too. I do mostly fitnessblender workouts from YouTube. They have a huge selection from very basic to advanced. I can't do a lot of the Hiit because it kills my knee but there's something for every level.
I FEEL so much better and so much stronger since I committed to working out and have started watching my calories. That was another short term goal. Not to worry about lbs falling off, but creating healthier habits and exercising. The weight will follow. Down 2 lbs, but I took some measurements and a before pic to compare after a month too.
You can do it. Make it a priority.

The poster above nailed it on the head for me with "logging my food everyday" which has been a real eye opener. Yes the majority of days I have been under deficit but there has been a few days where I have eaten more especially when I have been out. It's important to remember than 1 or 2 bad days a month are not the end of the world...it's the big picture...the whole month which is important.
