It seems like 1 syn = 20 calories. So if you ate a 100 calorie cookie, that would cost you 5 syns. The daily limit is 300 calories of syn. I'm not sure why they don't just tell you, eat 300 calories of whatever you want each day.0

not sure either, but sw is religious about it being not a calorie diet, it thrives on being a no counting calorie plan - so you have free food, measured weights of healthy b and healthy a which is your fibre and chese/milk/dairy. then your 15 syns a day0

The funny thing is this..portion control is the crux of weight loss...it really is. Regardless of how you do it (counting calories, intuitive eating etc) it's all about portion control and if SW isn't teaching that...I wouldn't do it.
Processed food is good that is manufactured in a factory. All the foods that you see in the supermarkets that are packaged, tinned etc. Home made apple sauce is home made, no preservatives are added to help its shelf life.

People should count their calories or at least be bothered to read the nutritional value on the back of food etc. Take responsibility for what your consuming. Don't just mindlessly eat whatever a slimming company tells you you can. Part of peoples journey on weight loss should be to learn and not just eat what their told too like robots, or dare I say it children.0

That's one definition, there are others who believe any sort of alteration from its natural state, ie cooking, is processing.
Even if we go with your definition, if something comes in a package it is unhealthy? Greek Yogurt? Steel Cut Oats? Baby Carrots? Canned tomatoes?

A friend of mine has done Slimming World a few times (and Weightwatchers a few times but won't join MFP). She did a dinner party for us once and it put me off SW massively. For mains we had chicken breast in a chicken tonight sauce (branded because she knew the exact syns - I just thought why not make a sauce from scratch? Tin of chopped tomatoes with onion, garlic, capers and black olives for example) with veg and potatoes. Now, these potatoes had no butter on. No butter!! What is that about?! Potatoes without butter shouldn't be allowed in any diet. Life is pointless without butter on potatoes. (Unless you can't have dairy in which case fill your boots with alternative fats).
Anyways, as I mentioned she's got back and forth on paid for diet plans and is never ever happy with herself. She gives up and gains, gets down about it. So frustrating to see her sad but refusing to exercise with excuses. I've got other bigger friends who look hot, own it and love life. Go them!
When I explain how I've lost over a stone on MFP she just implies that it's easy for me. Hmm... We're the same age, same height, both have young kids and work. It's. The. Same.0 -
I tried Slimming World and it was OK for the first 20lb of weight loss, but I got totally stuck after that. Now, of course, I can see that my calorie consumption was just too great to continue weight loss, even with the cardio I was doing. I agree with the opinions that SW relies far too heavily on pre-prepared foods, and ones that are fat free but loaded with artificial sweeteners (I hate the taste of them but, of course, some people like them).
In my SW group, they tried to actively discourage people from calorie counting alongside doing their syns - obvious why! Their only suggestions when I asked for advice for the never-ending plateau was 'switch from green to red', or 'change what syns you're having'. Not helpful at all, and I suspect the major weight-lossers are not actually strictly following a SW diet by the end, but SW hangs onto them as proof of their success (there was a woman who got Slimmer of The Year, and I always thought she was trying to hint that she basically left the SW principles behind once she got past the initial weight loss and started in on the final 30-odd lbs). Of course, if you never snack, it could possibly work, but who NEVER snacks?!
I do agree that SW doesn't actually educate it's members properly about nutrition - they just slap a syn value on packets and tell people that syn counting is easier than calorie counting. Bulls***! So I, and others, fall back into the old habits when SW stops working, because we don't see SW food consumption changes as sustainable.
BTW, don't get me started on Weight Watchers - I went to one meeting with a friend, and I've never seen a product placement hard sell dressed up as a weight loss support group quite like that one. You had to run a veritable maze of people selling WW branded products before you got into the venue!0 -
A friend of mine went on slimming world and to be perfectly honest reading through the material they gave her it made no sense to me whatsoever, I've done weight watchers myself lots of times and tried again just before finding mfp, ww no longer works for me I didn't lose a lb. mfp on the other hand has helped me lose about 3st in weight so calorie counting all the way for me.0

I've been doing slimming world since January lost 17lb, but I've not lost now since April! I'm thinking my portions are maybe too big or I'm eating to much free foods?! I've tried the SP last week and still maintained?! I feel like giving up on slimming world and doing it myself now.0

Yes, when I hull a strawberry and throw it in the freezer, technically I am "processing" it, but I agree that when people talk about reducing "processed foods" they mean "convenience foods" as discussed in your link.

syns are for times when you need that little bar of chocolate - its around 20 cals per 1 syn. example a average chocolate bar is 12 syns
Sorry, but that sounds rather lame. And confusing. Why not just call a calorie a calorie?
Because you can't charge for plain old calorie counting. Gotta have a gimmick.
ETA: OP, the calorie counts in those meals sound really high to me, too! I maintain at a lower TDEE than other MFP users, though. Alas.0 -

Your best bet is to save your money and make your own food and accurately calculate the calories rather than buying some overpriced, high calorie, diet plan food.
Most of these plans also tout the fact that you don't have to count calories if you use them but you are still counting points or "syns" or something so why not cut out the middle man and just count calories?
Weight Watchers counts fruit and veggies as free in their Points Plus program.0 -

I've been on Weight Watchers (similar to SW) more than once and always lost weight initially then stalled as well. Once I found MFP and educated myself about calories in/calories out it made a world of difference. I found out that "free fruit" was a problem along with portion control for me. I discovered that a moderate carb intake coupled with a slightly higher percentage of protein and healthy fats was my sweet spot (30% carbs/35% protein/35% fat). BA-BAM! The weight came off consistently over time; never plateaued. I've dropped 48lbs and I'm about 4-6lbs from maintenance.

I would try a week of calorie counting, weigh all foods, I told myself was doing red days Cus I was scared to leave the comfort blanket of sw. Oh my!! 2.5lbs loss that week and last week another 2.5lbs loss!! Think its all about portion control!!0
