I'm just beginning to lift. Not free weights unfortunately, but I have a bowflex. I'm about 10 pounds away from my goal weight but still, well... flabby! I want to tone and build muscle. So my question for you is, do you do any cardio along with your lifting? Is it needed?

I don't like it either unless it's in the form of a sport or I'll run if it's a race.

I'll run across the street if the light is going to turn.

Or if I go way way way over my calorie goal for the week.
  • I lift M/W/F and do 30 minutes of cardio T/TH/Sat

Yes, I do the running when the light changes too!

When I lift, I can run better than when I run. Are you stronger than you were? Are you eating enough? If you are gaining strength, you will get to looking better. But how you look isn't as important as how you feel. When you feel great, your looks will take care of themselves. Push yourself on your weights, and rest and eat so that you gain strength. Only run because you can, because it's fun, because you want to get there faster--or to chase grandkids.

    LOL love this answer :)

As little as possible as I detest cardio.

I walk at lunch most days - about 1.4 miles around the loop. While on a cut, I may add in 30 minutes of some form of "regular" cardio once a week. Also, during autumn, I officiate high school and youth football - so I get a bit of running in then.

It's gotten to the point where I THINK I'll do some cardio, sit down on a stationary bike, pedal lightly, and have difficulty making it 5 minutes. The only reason I pushed myself to finish 5 the other day was because there was someone next to me and I felt self conscious finishing after 2 minutes.

Does anyone still have a large amount of weight to lose and still lifting? I would guess I should be doing cardio as well as lifting. Have about 60 more lbs to my goal weight.

    I do cardio.
Walk almost daily, try to incorporate yoga, I cycle, hike, ski, run (sorta).
I like it. So I do it.

Eat right to look good in clothes.
Lift weights to look good naked.
Cardio to do both of those as long as possible. :)

I enjoy cardio so I do it regularly. Not a ton at a time--usually 2-3 mile runs, 30 minute walks, or short (10 minute) conditioning workouts.

I started lifting half way through my weight loss and did walking the whole time I lost weight and now maintaining. I lost 121 pounds. :)

This SO me. Only it's the elliptical for me. There's always someone next to me that has been on it for an hour and I feel like I have to get in at least 5 of the 20 minutes I set it for. I hate cardio.

I do running, biking, swimming, etc but I enjoy it, and I find I feel better when I do some of both (lifting and cardio) rather than concentrate on only one.

As to whether it's necessary, that depends on what you mean... necessary for what?

Thanks! I am going to keep walking...I feel comfortable with that balance.

I hear you. One time I was eating hard candies while on the step mill. Lasted 5 minutes before I was like...what am I doing even?
