Just watch the sugar. I aim for 45gm or less (don't always make it), but lost over eight lbs doing it (and eating pretty much what I want).0

The weight loss came from a caloric deficit... not restricting sugar. I don't know if you checked, but OP is a male. That means his RDA sugar is around 70mg (depending where you get the RDA from).
I don't happen to bother with RDA sugar

This within reason, what you are looking to do is create a calorie deficit and that is often difficult to do eating our standard diets.
Add in some nutrient dense filling foods, lean protein sources and foods high in fibre work for me in that respect. I have a new found love of fish, fruit, vegetables, beans and pulses and by including these foods I find that they keep me satiated with enough calories left over for wine, beer, ice cream and the occasional meal out.
Some will tell you to steer away from processed convenience foods but they are a real time saver sometimes, you just have to get used to reading the nutrition labels to make sure they fit in with your daily goals
And if you havent already then buy a set of digital kitchen scales and be prepared to weight all solids and measure all liquids0 -

It's from the calories you are eating in surplus. That's what weight loss and weight gain boils down to.
Weight loss comes from a caloric deficit - you eat less than your body needs and hence lose weight.
Weight gain comes from a caloric surplus - you eat more than your body needs, and hence gain weight.0 -

Eating the calories you burn is fine, but depending what you are using to measure the calories burned sometimes they overestimate it. Eating back 50-80% of the exercise calories burned is usually what most people aim for.0

I'm going to say food is your best option. Yeah. Eat food.
No seriously. MFP is not a "diet" It's not about cutting "bad foods" out of your diet. It's about calorie deficit and learning how to portion out your food choices so you can develop healthy life habits. I don't restrict myself on anything. That was probably the hardest thing to learn how to do when starting this. Getting rid of that good food bad food mind set. There are no right or wrong foods as long as you're weighing and tracking everything. And of course it should be edible.0 -
Eat whatever you were eating before but less of it.0
