Hello, my name is Brooklyn and I'm a foodaholic

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to say other than I think it's time to make a change. I'm obese (although people just think I'm a big guy), and I believe my thyroid is underperforming. At times in my life I would attack the gym like an elite athlete and eat cleaner and lose only 1-2 lbs a month. I would then get discouraged and go back to eating poorly and cease exercising. Over this past year, I lost my brother and father to heart related issues. I couldn't do that to my mom or my brothers and my own children. So I've decided to give this weight the fight of my life. I'm looking to lose about 140lbs in 24 months. Gym + diet!!! Looking for advice and buddies. I started June 1.

I feel the need to say: "hello Brooklyn" in a chorus with other people.

Anyway, it sounds like you are doing it for all the right reasons.
Can't really give you advice from personal experience, but your goal and time frame sound absolutely possible!
Hope these first few days have been good for you.

The best of luck to you on this journey. Don't let the bad days get you down.

A healthy, sustainable loss is .5 lb.–2 lbs. per week, so 140 lbs. in two years is absolutely doable.

I have Hashimoto's (autoimmune thyroid disease), and I lost just like everybody else—by eating fewer calories than I burn. Logging works.

I followed the advice in the Sexypants post: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/1080242/a-guide-to-get-you-started-on-your-path-to-sexypants/p1

You can eat clean all you want but if you don't keep track of the amount you eat , you can be eating over your calorie goal. Hence not losing weight. Exercise is great, but exercise alone won't get you there. @editorgrrl posted a very worthy link to read. Good luck, OP.

    Hi Brooklyn,

You seem to have solid motivation and reasons. Your big goal is certainly reasonable and possible.

For me logging and wearing a fitness monitor. {my favorite is the misfit shine} has been the key.

I also made a point to not eat anything and I mean anything after 730 pm. The only exception is if I got caught and had not eaten supper due to an event that served a late meal... I would partake but go very light on quantity.

Also early for me I limited my breads, rice, and fruits to get a nice head start and continue to go easy on those items. For me the sugar levels made it hard for me to loose. Now I eat those items but only limited amounts.

Green is good and lean proteins. Tree nuts are a life saver too.

It was a life style change for me.

    You can do this.

    Welcome aboard!

I had a total thyroidectomy and put on the lbs gradually over 15 years, lost ~50 in the last year since I started logging on MFP. Editorgrrl posted a link - follow that link as it is quite possibly the best advice on the site.

As for being hypothyroid get yourself tested for TSH, T4, T3, & RT3 and goal for your TSH between 0.3-3.0. Note that you may be hypothyroid simply due to the excess weight and you will have difficulty getting your hormones under control simply by being overweight - it's all one big cycle.

Don't worry about "eating clean" - it's calorie in < calorie out. As long as you get your basic nutrients the weight will come off gradually if you're in caloric deficit.

Make small changes, post frequently, set small goals, and most of all be patient. This is a marathon, not a sprint.

Most importantly is to stay positive and focus on your gains whether they be body composition, endurance, improved BP, HR, etc. Keep tabs on this information as well and chart it out. You got this!

You lose weight by eating fewer calories than you burn—period. You can eat anything in moderation and still lose weight.

How much you eat matters way more than when you eat or what you eat. Just eat what you like—and log it. Logging works.
