Hi,

I'm a postman and I am finding it hard to fit food into my work day. I'm just getting started on changing my lifestyle (not dieting)

My typical day has been:

Breakfast around 08:00
No lunch as I am working non stop
Get home around 15:00 - cook tea for me and kids generally healthy
Kids go to bed and I binge eat, which I imagine is caused by the fact I skip lunch.

I'm looking for any ideas for things I can do for lunch on the move. Is just taking a few bits of fruit enough? I also want to cut as much bread from my diet as possible.

Thanks

Dean

Yes you're binging because you're skipping meals. If you're on the go then you can eat on the go. boiled eggs, cooked sausages and meats, low carb bread from morrisons (livlife), fruit, stay away from the breakfast bars etc full of carbs and sugar. jelly pots, it takes 10 minutes to eat a salad. you need to decide what is more important, can you not stop at all for 10 minutes to eat? you need to fuel and sustain your body as at the moment there is no point you eating a healthy breakfast and tea if you're going to binge late at night it out does all the work. sacrifices need to be made and it isn't hard. KFC even do a salad for around 250 cals if you really were stuck.

When we eat proper meals we don't feel like stuffing ourselves in the evenings. Being prepared in advance is key.

Bread is not the enemy, its about moderation - you could prepare a sandwich / roll/ wrap / pasta with lots of protein and salad inside it and that'll really satisfy you. Losing weight is all about CICO (calories in, calories out).

e.g a tuna salad with pasta prepared in advance and tastes just as yummy cold. (I mix tuna/red onion/sweetcorn/peppers in chilli sauce and toss that into 50g of pasta or have it in a wrap).

You can also snack on fruit but it wont fill you as well as the protein.

In the evenings when you are inclined to eat drink plenty of water and ask yourself are you really hungry? most likely you will be eating out of boredom, we all do this. Its a matter of choosing better snacks or deciding you just need to hydrate.

why not just eat a bigger meal at 3, then you wont binge later?

I would suggest protein/meal bars to keep you fueled while working.

there are many options for you in terms of healthy on the go snacks.I agree with the idea of protein bars- quest bars are delicious, protein packed and have only 1 gram of sugar which is great. I understand not wanting to eat bread, I feel the same way. You could get low carb/calorie wraps and just have something super simple like turkey and cheese with some mustard. It takes virtually no time to prepare and can be eaten with one hand.

Fruit, raw veggies, string cheese, and or nuts are also no fuss options.

Can you bring along a cooler? String cheese and an apple is a great snack. Or some healthy crackers and peanut butter. I agree with the previous posters who suggested eating something at three. I understand being tired when you get home. Can you prepare something in a crockpot so it's ready for you?

Could you pack a cooler or some sort of lunch bag with an ice pack? I eat cold leftovers for lunch almost every day. When I make dinner, I will make a few extra servings and put them in their own Tupperware containers, throw those in my lunch bag, and head to work. I eat a lot of meat with steamed or roasted veggies and rice. (I have a rice cooker, and I make a pot of rice almost every week and refrigerate the leftovers). Some of my other lunchtime favorites are hard boiled eggs, babybel cheese, tuna salad mixed with avocado and lime juice instead of mayo, cut up fruit, unsweetened applesauce cups, granola bars, and yogurt.

Not sure why you can't stop for 5-10 minutes just to eat for lunch. Are you in a car or on foot? My last job only allowed 15 minute breaks and I was able to eat my full meal in that time frame. I usually do a protein (chicken, ground beef or turkey), chickpeas or black beans with a veggie. Eat with a spoon so it's a little quicker... good even cold as long as it was all cooked beforehand.
