Exercise while Sunburnt?

My mind is telling me no.
But my body,
My body's telling me yeeeeeehessss.
Okay, now that I got that out of the way. Anyone think it's okay to exercise with sunburnt legs or should I keep off of them for fear of the extra body heat causing some pretty intense pain? (I've got a zumba class tonight that I want to go to but I'm not sure if it's a 100% grand idea.)

I have never had sunburned legs. Does it really hurt that much?0

It's okay if I'm not moving but when I'm walking it starts to sting. I'm worried about the combination of the extra body heat, the movement, and the sweat causing it to get worse. I can suck it up as long as it's not going to make it any worse. I've never had sunburned legs before either. It's quite irritating more than anything.0

I don't think you can make a sunburn worse in any way other than getting more sun. That said, I think you're going to find it a painful experience. I had a really bad burn one weekend when I was in high school and had to go to gymnastics practice that following Monday afternoon. My coach had no sympathy and lets just say that 30+ years later I still remember what a miserable afternoon that was.0

Take a cool bath and slather on the aloe tonight, see how you feel tomorrow. I'm pasty colored and get sunburned a lot, if you overdo it tonight then you could really start feeling crappy. Better to wait a day or two and be healthy & happy.0

You're not going to make it worse, so if you can deal with it and want to deal with it, then go for it. If you can't/don't, then don't.
I'd probably go with tighter fitting clothes so they don't move while you workout. Getting them on might suck, but once there are there you should be ok.0 -
I think if you drink lots of water, use an aloe lotion (maybe not a gel since it dries weird) and choose your pants carefully you'll be ok. Something really soft, not tight... or wear a bright pink leotard with high cut leg holes and yellow wrist and head bands - just go all 80's on that Zumba (added bonus, no clothes on your legs).0

OP - if you want, give it a go! Excess sweating would cause more discomfort, and just stop if it's bugging you too much!
Aloe, water, and then a cold shower/ice bath works great too!

You can actually get "sun poisoning" with a burn. If it's uncomfortable, I wouldn't push it.

No, you can get it from sunBURN, meaning hours or a day later at home. See my "sun poisoning" link.0 -

What does that have to do with anything? Pain is not a good indicator for the severity of a burn, anyway. Generally the more painful it is, the less damage has been done.
OP, whether you go or not is up to you. The burn doesn't sound too bad, but it will hurt unless you buy some of that lidocaine spray you can buy at the drugstore and apply it liberally. I'd also recommend liberally applying some good moisturizing lotion - aloe or something else soothing.0 -
I'm the palest person on the entire forums. I've been sunburned badly enough and so many times that I've even sunburned my eyeballs before. Yes, it's a real thing.
If the OP was having seizures and such I don't think she would be asking these questions. Regular sunburn (first degree), redness and peeling skin? You can work out just fine. If you want to make excuses, that's fine, but I'd make better ones. Like claiming you were scorched while saving children from the orphanage fire down the road.0 -

the salty sweat might sting, and I wouldn't wear long pants that rub on the skin, but otherwise, i think you're okay. Drink more water than usual - your skin needs to be hydrated. Aloe will feel nice and cool on your legs. There's something called Solarcaine that's fantastic for sunburn and sprays on icy cold.

OP, how are your legs today? I'm so white that the sun reflects off of me--I've really never had sunburn on my legs. It sounds painful, though. I don't think that skipping a workout is the end of the world. I am assuming that you are not training for the Olympics and that your livelihood doesn't depend on making it to the gym each day. Hope you're feeling better today.0 -
Sunburns can be quite serious. If the pain isn't too bad my next worry would be dehydration. If both of your legs are burnt that is a lot of skin that needs to be re-hydrated to repair itself. I would up my water intake, and use aloe vera on the burned skin. Exercise should be okay if you make sure to stay hydrated.0

How cool is your zumba studio? we're in the 30s here (high 80s/low 90s F) and no air con so I'm missing zumba tomorrow night even without sunburn! I find the Clinique aftersun is the most effective - not cheap but it absorbs easily so is more effective with less product. (And no I'm not paid by Clinique! But always happy to accept freebies if Clinique want to PM me )0

When I got home last night I went for a little jog to see if my legs could handle anything. As soon as my heart rate got up the pain got pretty intense. I ended up skipping the zumba and soaked in a super cold bath then coated my legs in aloe. Today they feel waaaaaay better. Still pretty red but the pain isn't there unless I touch it with quite a bit of pressure. Taking the day off was definitely the right choice. I'd rather skip a day and be able to hit it hard the next day as opposed to suffering through it and being in too much pain to give it any effort.

Just a heads up though, I never thought my legs would burn so when I went tubing down the river I coated my arms/back with sunscreen and just put a thin layer on my legs. Not a good idea. Protect those babies just like you would any other part of your body. Pants suck with burned legs.0
